why im glad the brz doesnt have a turbo.

before we start, if you dont agree with me, fantastic. you have every right not to. if you do, great. im just sharing my own personal thoughts for myself that others may or may not relate to.

when i bought my brz last year i made sure to do the due diligence and test a wrx. also tested a bmw 228i m sport. they were both great cars but something about the experience that i couldnt quite put my finger on was a bit lacking so i went with the brz.

fast forward a year and ive upgraded my rental car on this weekend trip in la to a mercedes roadster. its my first opportunity to live with a turbo engined car. and i must say, the balls when you punch the throttle is great, i even outran an frs on an onramp in a semi non serious moment. but what i miss dearly is the immediacy of getting exactly what im asking from the car. my brz has less to give but gives it exactly how when and where i ask it to. this mercedes is like a guessing game of when boost kicks in and exactly how much you get. fun? yes. my kind of preferred fun? not as much.

so for that reason im glad we didnt get the fa20 with turbo from subaru, it would upset the precision of the car.

now a supercharger, thats a different story. if i can ever save up an extra 6k youd better believe id put a jackson racing or edelbrock sc on my whip..but thats a different post in a different section on a different day..

Hmm good review but out of common sense wouldn't you also eventually get used to boost timing as you drive with turbochargers anyways?

Well he mentioned "it's like I guessing game" as in when boost kicks in, so if you drive the car enough you'll know when it'll kick it and not have to guess? I didn't meant like or not

Sure, but OP did make a strong point about preference. It's not a dig on turbos at all. I just read it as a realistic take on turbo lag.

Ah just trying to learn more, but it's true if you drive a turbocharged car for a while you'll eventually have better timing with boost correct? gauges helps too I assume? 😃

Oh, sure. Gauges are nice to keep an eye on things but it really is about having a feel for the timing just as you say. There's also that technique of feathering the throttle to stay in boost but for pure throttle response there's nothing like that sweet NA goodness.

im sure you develop a better feel as time goes on but thats precisely the point, the brz enhances what i want to do and the turbo engine leaves me trying to shape how i drive around what it wants to do. i know what im getting from 0-25% throttle and i know im grinning at 100% throttle but those in betweens get a bit questionable.

as an aside i think the wife wants a benz roadster now. ha!

In well known situations in a racing track you usually don't have issues. Car will rev high, quite above the turbo spooling area. In other situations you are correct and for sure it upsets the balance and the handling. Especially on a RWD car. A twin turbo can hide a lot of this effect, but then you have a car with even more complexity and more weight ...

I'm glad it didn't have Turbo for simplicity. I'm a sucker for things that just work and that you don't know to have a degree in wizardry in order to understand whats going on.

Dont worry about the lag in power delivery. Just enjoy the lag period that comes right before the money gets sucked out of your wallet.
