We didn't get a look at the interior until Oct 2018.

regarding the 17 86/BRZ that was just headlights and bumpers. if the Bestcar renders are accurate they will be new changes under the hood with a 2.4. visual wise the lights, bumpers, hood, fenders, mirrors, and trunk lid. less notices things are subtle changes for line cease on the top of the door and bottom side skirt.

were they tho? Camry XV40 and XV50 were basically the same car with reworked sheet metal and dressed up interior. the two even shared the same basic dimensions, platform and drivetrain. the 3rd gen Tacoma's cab and 2.7 were also carried over. the 14th gen F150's frame, cab, and drivetrains are all carried over from the 13th gen as well. i just think the lines are blur these days.

8th gen Accord (2008–2012) vs 9th (2013–2017) i can keep going on with ton of more examples, but dont wanna fill the thread up with more pics. i think we're just going to have to agree to disagree, but you're right time will tell.
The Twins base is already 10 years old. This isn't a matter of saying it is a 4 or 5 MY year "next gen".

I can already hear the press ripping it apart as presenting a 10 year old car with some minor changes as a "Next generation".

I could counter every one of your examples with examples of a radical change between generations but it won't convince you unless it comes from some clickbait site anyway.

do you know that a number or "next gen" will carry over anywhere from 30%+ of its predecessor components.

funny how Porsche and others always seem to get a free pass.

right, never said there weren't radical change between gens. but we were talking about evolution styling.

anyways, back on topic. im guessing one of the mods edited my OP with blown up pics. zooming in it looks like the A pillars are more angular like on the Zupra, 370z etc.

Well, sorry y'all... I honestly didn't even see the 2nd Gen Forum... Just took a look through the 86 and BRZ forums. Hopefully nobody sustained serious injury due to perusing a previously read link.

Dont worry, if you encountered the forum during the torque dip, nothing would have happened.

So that's where the bestcar renders are off. They have the a-pillars the same as the current car. They also have the top of the hood flush with the beltline. Also a little hard to be 100% certain because of the crappy vid. Lastly, how about everyone calm down until we get better pics/vid.

The standalone screen serves a purpose, trimming down the dash and keeping the sightlines optimal. Not my favourite, but these type of things are decided by committees.
The clock is not a throwback, its the same clock they've used since like the 80's or whenever clocks were placed on the dash somewhere. The only changes its ever really seen are colour and size.

Its 100% functional and damn near idiot proof. (one button to change hours, one button to change minutes). The only thing it doesnt tell is PM or AM but it should be obvious when you get in the car. I have the same clock in my Scion IM, except its blue instead of red/yellow/orange/whatever the 86 colour is. I had the same one in my Corolla XRS back in 2006, that one was green.

Just like the cruise control stalk, they've used that stalk forever and only now in the TNGA cars are they moving it to the steering wheel.

The 2021 Lexus IS is getting this exact flak. Of course they dont call it a new generation, but they do call it all new. Its a heavy rework of the existing car...downsides are it still uses the same chassis (upgraded, but not new) and powertrains (tried and true 2GR V6 for IS350, not-tuned-very-well turbo4 for IS 300, and the detuned 2GR for IS300 AWD, 8AT with RWD models, 6AT for AWD). The car has to impress from its chassis tuning and enhancements, since the rest of the spec sheet looks old and outdated. It doesnt have the built in advances of the TNGA platforms.

If the gen2 86 is going the same route, it'll have to impress the same way.

So we have now gone from, yea, that clickbait site with a render and info about the engine, weight, and other specification... well, if you look at this blurry, far away image of a camo car with padding to hide details... well, it doesn't 100% look like the render so it could still be anything!!!

???

The simplest explanation is usually correct. Why are we or trying to make it out to be something else entirely? Are we upset about it being a refresh? If we hope hard enough, will it change things? Are we heading back to claiming it might still be based on a WRX or that it switched to the TNGA platform?

They get a free pass because they are already perfect. Don't fix what's not broken.

who cares if it is refresh/next gen/same old shit, I think we should all be happy Toyota is cool with giving the 86 almost completely new sheet metal and doing something significant instead of letting the twins die or fade away into obscurity..especially coming out of covid I think it is pretty miraculous when folks were already clamoring on about the twins disappearing forever..
