Car & Driver: Quickest Cars Under $30,000

Interesting slide show but I'll start with number 5:

Anyone know the 0-60 time of a GT86 with just a header and tune? I feel like those alone could maybe put it on the list

I'm JDL 421 header and Delicious tune with a map for 95 octane and I havent timed it but I'm guessing in the mid 5's. It's just so much faster.

Thats like a bit less than a second faster, which is pretty damn good. Amazing what these two mods can do to an NA car

You might want to take a second (first?) look at the list.

This post needs hard data to be useful.

I was going to have a real rant about the fixation on 'quick this' and 'quick that'... Why oh why is it all about 'quick'? Then I thought, paused, had another moment to pause...... Then it came to me, if a car had a good balance and exploits this to the max to give great handling it would be a quick car.. But only quick in the right hands!!!

I always feel like the quoted 6.2 second 0-60 is wildly-optimistic.
And I wonder what unspeakable abuse the clutch had to endure for anything close to that...

I think they launch at like 5000rpm to get that based on a vague memory of some article. Soooo... Yeah.

I've done hundreds of clutch drops around 4k-5k rpm on much stickier tires than stock, clutch friction material looked great when I pulled it out at 75k miles.

It's not that bad.

Limiting factors are tires and gearing. 2nd tops out at just under 60 and stock touring tires are fun, but not great for launching. It's on the list already? Probably move up a few spaces if it were a 0-55 mph race and had performance tires. Or just a 5-55mph race.

Most canned tunes put the redline up high enough to hit 61-62 mph in second on the first gen cars with the mid-range gearing (i.e. not the tall gearing of the AT's or the shorter gearing of the facelifted cars)

I'd be curious to see if just swapping in sticker tires made a measurable difference.

But so are the numbers for every other car.
This always comes up in the "needs more power" debates. For some reason the dissenters say that these were forced to do that time but every other car they are compared to did it in a leisurely manner without launch. ALL the cars are launched at max capacity to get those lower times so it is still a standard of measurement.
