The consensus in this thread seems to be that the stock rockers are fine for the most part. The walking pin problem is rare enough that it's not something to worry about. The big problem is the stock valve springs. They're too weak, making it possible for the rocker to work it's way out of alignment. I do wonder if the walking rocker pin issue is even more rare than thought and it's the weak springs creating failures like mine that are being attributed to the pin.

On that note, I have a nice set of springs I can't use now..

Of the 4 used heads I found: one was listed twice and turned out to be damaged, I couldn't get a hold of the salvage yard of the second one, and the third when it showed up was from a FA20DIT. When I called the yard about the mixup they tried to convince me it was out of a BRZ and sent pictures of the car as if that meant something. The car was obviously flood damaged so I didn't bother to try and get the correct head from them.

At this point I had to look into other options. 1. build a new head, 2. buy a set of built heads. Pricing out option #1, building a single head and having a shop change the springs on the other, it turned out to be a significant portion of the cost of buying a pair of built heads. So I decided to go with the built heads.

Finally, they were delivered today:

Full Blown Motorsports Stage 2 heads.

Ferrea hardware including dual springs, titanium retainers, Comp Plus valves, seals, etc.

Shiny new valves. Exhaust valves at 1mm over-sized. Also FBM performed their "Competition Valve Job".

And a full P&P:

Exhaust.

Intake.

Can't wait to get these on! These, plus the Delicious 9.0 tune, should make for some pretty good numbers. Unfortunately, it will probably be Spring by the time I can get the car on a dyno.

Any link to where you bought these bud? I'd be interested to see more detail on what exactly they've upgraded

Cheers

According to my invoice, mine were spec'd a bit different:

- FBM Competition port and Polish intake and exhaust ports
- Competition Valve Job
- Resurfaced and Clean and assembly
- Ferrea Comp Plus Valves
- Ferrea Dual Valve Springs
- Ferrea Titanium Retainers
- Ferrea Seat locators and new valve stem seals

I called FBM directly and ordered the heads rather than via the web. I don't know if they tweaked my order or if the web site needs updating. But I definitely have double valve springs, not single.

I got a 2016 frs about a month ago. After reading this thread about his motor issue. My turbo build seems like it's going to cost alot more then I had thought. Did any of there motor issues get fixed in the 2016 models. I plan on having between 325 - 350whp and I'm thinking an internal overhaul is now needed.

The weak point is the valve springs. But there were some changes to the heads for the 2015 MY. It's thought that, along with longer valve stems, the springs were likely upgraded as well. Worst case, you can just upgrade the valve springs which would be far less than a set of built heads.

The rebuild has begun!

Tear down:

A peek at the cylinder with the rocker failure:

No impact from the valve! Though that bubble in the cylinder wall casting is unexpected. But I think if it were an issue, it would have caused a problem by now.

And the new heads are on!

Tear down to rebuild in one working day. ZB's the man. Can't wait to get this back on the road. I just hope the salt holds off long enough to burn off the tank of E85 before I put it in storage.

Check the valve clearances now that it's back together as some of mine were out of spec once assembled.

IT'S ALIVE!!

Unfortunately I can't pick it up until Monday. And I won't be able to get any real impressions before I have to park it Tuesday as I'll have to do some logging first. And then I'm away visiting family starting Wednesday.

Sigh.

Internal overhaul has ALWAYS been suggested when you go above 300 whp

Let's hope there's some wiggle room as I should be a bit north of 300. I just need to make sure my fueling is up to the task. I hate when I have a question that I can't address right away....
