House is 1905 we bought it in 2014... not sure when the mailbox was purchased. I think technically speaking the Fed owns all mailboxes... but pretty sure it's up to the homeowner to purchase, replace, repair, etc.

Had a box just like that for over 40 years. Was by the road though.
The top latch broke off ours too finally.
Then it got mashed up against the power pole when a car hit it. RIP.

Owner is responsible for the mailbox. Technically you buy, maintain and are responsible for it but it is controlled by USPS. It has to be an official "Postmaster Approved" design. You can build your own as long as the local postmaster reviews and approves it once it is complete.
