I am having the same problem, though I am on coilovers. I have replaced them completely and the problem still persists, even with nothing in the boot.

I am going to try that TSB fix sent out by Subaru about the “Clack” or “Popping” Sound from Trunk and /or Rear Shelf Area this weekend and see if that helps.

Mine only happens when going slowly, more so when cold. There is also a weird squeaking noise sometimes, sounds like rubber on metal.

This noise is driving me insane

My 15' with 7500 KMs developed this inconsistent clunk as well. Past couple of weeks I just started to notice it - Passenger-rear side, when driving over bumpy roads and imperfections at lower speeds. The car does not drive any differently, just the noise is frustrating. I am stock. but I do have 16s snow tires on steels at the moment. I will check the jack now, but my OCD is thinking it might be the strut after reading this! We will see, I will check with the dealer when I get my oil changed in a couple weeks.

If you suspect suspension problems get it checked now, not in a couple of weeks!
Hopefully nothing but damaged/defective suspension is not something to be trifled with.

I heard a similar knock (rear drivers side?)when I took my car off jacks after rotating tires, so I'm also looking forward to what you find.

I hate to say this, but great to hear others are having a similar issue: Left rear clunk (passenger side for me here in Aus) - it usually occurs when going over speed bumps, etc, it feels like the spring unloading fast without the strut controlling anything, exactly as WhataboutBob described:

"I'd suspect that you'd need a movement (think fast and high amplitude) that would require heavy damping before you'd hear the clunk. The clunk (i think) is the sound of the spring unloading without damping and the internals of the strut hitting their limits hard."

When I had my oil changed I had the dealer check it out. They told me that it was the cold winter temperatures causing my noise and that my suspension had nothing wrong with it. They told me something along the lines of "bushings having less flex in subzero temps". Well, now that winter is over, the noise has disappeared.

I ended up sending my coilovers back to the supplier. They updated the internals and now my clunks are gone. I think it had something to do with the suspension not responding fast enough to sudden changes.

Replace the axle nut. They're a known subie noise maker.
