I was looking at them but having never once seen a show I had no idea which was best or if I could battle damage it. Recommendations?

Yeah, it's a deep rabbit hole of a collection that is the Gundam franchise. There are lots of stories and different time lines / universes.

I would start with Gundam Unicorn movies. It's a nice quick intro to the Gundam universe

As for the actual model kits, hell yeah you can battle damage the shit out of them. Do yourself a favor and just google some examples.

What's a current interesting kit for you?

Currently I'm collecting all the Gundam Wing Endless Waltz editions. I liked that show so why not, I say. After that I'll go with Unicorn stuff. Maybe just two of those. But I'm in no hurry.

Nah. I keep them in my bedroom on top of the bookcase.
I had little cousins come over one day and I had some model cars on my coffee tables. Needless to say they ended up in pieces. So I learn my lesson since.

I have no interest in watching and movies. Just wondered is there is a "main" character to build.

Unfortunately for someone not familiar, there's technically a lot of "mains" especially the newer the series is, the series Mr.ac mentioned technically has 5 of them(you could say even more...). Ultimately though I would then start with the original RX-78 Gundam, nothing gets more main than the mascot of the entire franchise. If you want a main antagonist, although its cannon fodder for most of the show the Zaku II is always used as a mascot enemy unit.

Gundam kits vary widely with the simpler grunt suits often being the best actual pose-able models but lacking in flash, to units that are extremely gimmicky in design but can't do almost any posing.

How much you want to pay will also determine what you might end up. All the inexpensive kits are either old, Bandai has and will re-release ancient kits including the original 80s kits, or they're small(1/144 scale) with modest details like the No grade(often dirt cheap) or HG lines. You could have more detailed 1/144 kits and they're classed as RG kits. Mid level is 1/100 kits and they start with No grades which are relatively inexpensive but again lacking details, to MG kits which are better detailed and these days have a frame, these are the primary focus of Bandai's Gundam models. Finally the bigger 1/60 kits there are a few ancient no grade kits of this size, and then the really expensive PG kits.

Personally, I'd seek the newest version of whatever kit you're interested in. Gunpla kits have come a very long way, even the earlier MG kits pale to today's MG kits.

To start, a HGUC RX-78 I think is ideal. Not expensive, easy to build, very pose-able. Here's Hobby Search's entry, chosen only because they include a lot of pictures including the instruction manual and contents.

If it seems too pedestrian and small, the MG 3.0 RX-78 showcases how good a modern MG Gundam kit is but its also quite a bit more expensive than the HGUC.

There really is no main character. But just pick any one that looks cool to you.

Side note: in these shows the lines get blurred on who is a good guy or bad guy. You know the good guys you where rooting for half of the show turn out to be the bad guys.

So what ever robot you pick is either good or bad. Or both.

B-17 Memphis Belle built as a commission for a regular customer. Very historical aircraft. He wanted it battle damaged but there are no pictures of the actual plane when damaged. Built it as the movie version ("based" on the real story but very fictionalized) where it received all the damage from it's total of 25 missions in about 5 minutes of just 1.
And yes @Dadhawk I feathered the prop on the burned out engine.

Hey @Tcoat, found a couple more model kits. Looks like the Snake and Mongoose one is just the remake, not worth much. I wish I had known years ago. Years ago I bought a big lot of model kits from a hobby shop going out of business for next to nothing. I was making hard body 1/24 slot cars with them. I must have thrown out at least 20 because I figured they weren't worth enough to bother with Ebay.

All those have been reissued except the Cox one. There could be some value in it. Even the Midget racer (same box art and all) on was reissued only about a year ago.
I have bits and pieces of the Snake and Mongoose ones from when I was a kid in a box around home someplace.
