I know you said you didn't want to swap the car but it will be considerably cheaper and easier in the long run.

I would start with removing the automatic transmission while tracing all of the different harness, vacuum, coolant, oil connections to engine. After transferring transmission and making the extra harness connections, you will probably need to transfer pedal shifters and probably the ECU as well since AT has different software. I haven't seen such a transplantation before. I would ask in the engine swap forum. They should know better. You can also ask @Opie and @Dave-ROR in their thread. |

You will need to swap the engine bay harness and the dash harness along with ecm and bcm and transmission ecm. Transcooler and piping and abs module. This will require removal of console and dash. Its pretty major. But if you have the time and parts its not hard on the brain

Why is it hard? Do you pin the clutch while you're pulled over? Just put it into neutral and relax. I live in Toronto and even with our traffic I have no issues

After reading a number of threads like this over the years, I would advise against it. Easier to return to stock, sell car, buy new car and put aftermarket parts on. If you go with the switch you better like a project. Likely take some time and money. I personally hate wiring, so that alone would stop me. I thought about doing this on my 04WRX except going auto to manual. After my research it was not worth the effort. Money better spent elsewhere. Good luck. |

Everybody keeps talking about the electronics but there are several mechanical changes to the engine as well (i.e. the brake booster vacuum pump). Not just a matter of swapping trannys hooking up some wires and driving away.

How much do you like wasting time? S*** it might be easier to fix up the salvage car depending on how bad it is lol. Sounds like you have two cars there.

it seems to be the politically incorrect thing to say, but if you're sitting bumper to bumper and there's nowhere to go anyway, what's the point in always being ready to move? Plus the first time I got rear ended was the one time I took my eyes off the rear view mirror, as Murphy's law would have it. Wouldn't have made a difference if I had my foot on the clutch or not (iirc I was in an auto car anyway). The other time I got rear ended, the guy bent over to get something from the glovebox and the car crept into my bumper. I had nowhere to go and there was literally nothing I could do but wait for that thud. So I always put it into neutral and relax.

This will give you an idea of whats involved.
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3042965 I personally would not run away from it. I would not trade a car just to not do the get involved but that's me. It is a lot of screwing around. I can also afford for the car just to sit in case shit goes south and I have people I can lean on for help. |

Probably easier going mt swap to auto vs auto to mt. Especially if you have an auto to pull parts. If you can swap the engine, trans, driveshaft, ecu, tcu, wiring harness, brake booster, instrument cluster, and the entire gear selector and gear selector trim from the auto to the MT then should pretty do able.

Trade your manual with someone who has an auto who wants the more 'engaging' experience - can't hurt to inquire around
