To the OP, if you want to stay engaged, do what the fiancé wants. If you want more fun, just test drive one. You won't want to stay in your Golf any longer, no matter the MPG's.

This is all a matter of opinion. VW finds its balance with build quality and aim at all age groups at an affordable price. Introductory class Japanese cars tend to have crap interiors but tend to have far better reliability, mpg, and longevity with it owners. The Golf is actually a very iconic Euro ride, probably even ahead of the 3 series, as the GTI model is known worldwide as being an excellent DD for all age groups and lifestyles. Its been that way for like 30 years now. Noone knows how the FR-S will fair in 10 years. The Golf/GTI will live forever though.

I currently have a mk6 GTI and FR-S.

Very different cars, but great in their own ways. The GTI is the better commuter/long-distance car, and I would guess your TDI would be as well. More space, usable rear seats, nicer interior, and softer ride.

The FR-S is the better sports car. Better handling, oversteer on-demand, more fun on twisty roads, more fun to autocross, better steering, lower, etc. Speed-wise, the FR-S is about as fast as a stock GTI (manual v. manual), meaning not that fast, but should be faster than your current TDI.

Both cars had some quality issues, but nothing crazy. On the FR-S, my ECU needed to be re-flashed and I'm starting to hear some HPFP chirps (there's a TSB out on that, just haven't gotten it done). In comparison, my GTI had a leaky rear windshield spray and some awful creaking from the rubber door seals.

I will agree with you that VWs age gracefully, their interiors are very nice and their styling is conservative, which is partly the reason why they look decent with age

The thing that bugs me about the FR-S is the lame cf-style dash. That will not look cool 10 years from now.

Although I didn't drive Golf TDI/GTI, I'm coming from Audi A4 Quattro 2.0T. I know it's not the same comparison, but from same VAG. I don't regret getting FR-S 3 weeks ago.

Because VAG has higher quality, style and comfort, the repair and maintenance cost was very high. I had the car until 138,000 miles and it finally showed the major problem that I decided to trade the car. That torque converter...

Anyways, hope you find a good deal on what you're looking for. There isn't much electrical problems on modern VAG cars. It's just rumors. The only electrical problem I had was replacing 1 or 2 blown fuses... Just lots of wearing and aftermarket parts were so damn expensive.

All in all, loving this FR-S every time I push that clutch and shift knob.

If you get a BRZ youll notice slight understeer before crossing the threshold where the rear end kicks out. From what ive noticed the FRS doesn't have this slight understeer before the end slides out.

If you're new to RWD cars it will take some getting used to. I've driven Trans Ams, Mustangs and other RWD cars without any problem. The thing to remember is don't do stuff like this Corvette did in this video, he's a perfect example of what not to do.
