What do you mean? Just stay in gear while you take a big fat bite of your jumbo burrito, or text someone on your "hands free" mounted device. Modern problems require Modern solutions.

Since you say limbs I don't even wanna know what your left foot is doing that causes such a ruckus.

Not to start a pissing match here, but I'm sorry, arguing about a manual being better is about making yourself feel better, more superior or more important.

I have absolutely no problem with someone preferring a manual. That is simply a choice. As is someone preferring or being happy with an automatic.

I will end this by simply saying that F1 cars are automatics

I'm sure that are a lot of people that have the same "problem",and in that case, you are proving my point.

F1 cars are probably the worst thing you could've used as an example. They're literally a different realm of vehicle, not even street legal.

Just how often are some of you guys shifting? Does everybody have a stop sign every block or something??

You have these?

Both my hands are free about 98% of the time I am driving.

I read somewhere that 3 out of 4 of the GT86s bought are automatic, which is crazy to me. In my opinion if you get this car in auto it defeats the point.

And what point is that? It's a light RWD sports car with great handling and classic looks? None of that requires a MT.

stop signs, and intersections that don't have stop signs have red lights that are usually red.

i'd buy a lottery ticket if i hit 3 traffic lights that were green it happens so rarely.

i burn half my gas waiting for trains, and slowing down/restarting for traffic lights and stop signs...

welcome to the midwest!

OK so let's be really pessimistic and say that you have to shift 20% of the time you are driving (that would be a pile of shifting). That still leaves your hand and foot free for the vast bulk of the time.
I highly doubt that people are shifting as much as they seem to think they are.

the cars been staying on mostly local surface streets. 1-2-3-4 to 40mph, revmatch 3-2-1#manuel, traffic light, 1-2-3-4 to 40mph, repeat every 0.5 miles at best for 5 miles.

agreed when i'm on the highway, but that hasn't been happening lately.

If you're on surface streets you can easily skip shift 1, 2 -> 4 (or 1 ->3, 4) . Personally, on level streets I shift to 6 at 40mph and it does just fine. At the least I'd be in 5th at 40 if I needed a little more torque and it doesn't lug the motor at all. So from a stop I'd do 1, 2 ->4 ->6.

As far as downshifting goes, brake pads are cheaper than clutches and synchros. Clutch-in and brake. Look at that, just reduced your shifting by like 80%.
