Also outside of price, felt it’s not a good comparison. Cuz Supra is 6 cyl vs that cayman was 4 cyl. I feel, 4 cyl Supra VW base model Cayman 4 cyl is a good comparison.

Unsure about the update.. The only Cayman that interests is the GT4 and I was considering it before going down the older car route.. who knows if that was the right direction..

Porsche do have a tendency to flog a dead horse way too long, much like Lotus..

Do love Cayman GT4... but didn't they have weak chassis? Saw few cracked near front suspension.

Porsche's 0-60 numbers are conservative, they probably don't give the cars a 1-ft "rollout" that the carmags apparently do... GTS 4.0 PDK should be a few tenths quicker as well.

For sure the Supra is a *much* better bargain. I would also bet that it wins in real-world "fun-to-driveness". But I bet the FT86 beats both of 'em on that count
That’s true too. It is lighter.

I would buy the manual 4.0 GTS, but the 2.5T GTS is probably faster to 60, which I don’t really care about. It has more low end torque, which is why I figure it is faster, but maybe I suppose the 4.0 could still manage a better time with rpms or gearing. The 2.5T would be the better tuner car over the 4.0 if someone wanted to get more cheap power, but the NA 6-cylinder is definitely a more satisfying platform.

Agreed that the 86 is probably better. I need to Turo the Supra and Cayman to see if they are better as a future buying option. Right now my 86 is spec’ed so good that it is hard for me to find a comparable replacement as a future upgrade. I might just buy the 2nd gen 86.

The model came out in mid noughties, it's been around for some time.. it's like when the new Twin comes next year.. it's not a totally new model, it's still based on the current cars underpinnings.. the current car came out in 2012.

Well for the most part there's nothing terribly wrong with any of the "old" underpinnings that might have carried over. Newer isn't always better, frequently cars evolve in the wrong direction.

What I was trying to get across was that the new Supra should not be pitched against an old car... It's nice to compare and contrast with older models but used as benchmarks, I'm not so sure.

Benchmarking is an important part of product development. It doesn't mean you're trying to copy the other product verbatim, or that you're aiming at an old target which will have moved on soon. They did a great job benchmarking the 987 in developing the FT86. I like my BRZ so much that after comparing it vs. 987.2 Cayman over a year on the street and at the track, I kept it and sold the Cayman!

Honestly, I would compare the Supra to an older car. It would be an earlier Cayman and I would buy the Cayman because I just think it is a better looking car even after having seen a couple Supra on the street and the dealer lots.
