Oil cooler installed. It was risky doing it before a track day, but its Texas heat so I'll think it'll be worth it. No leaks so far after beating on it with @Chris@Phastek. Thanks man I owe you

Quick update: 20 miles of cruising at 80mph and peaked at 206. Normally I'd see 226-230 doing this.
I'll look for him.

Driver's Edge Education Event
Today was my first time ever doing any sort of high performance driving of any sort (HPDE, Autox, DE, etc) I've always had FWD autoboxes until now; never thought it was worth it to push those cars on a track. Had a blast and I'm hooked. Went in as a sponge and learned a whole ton today. The instructor and I agreed that the mods I've done to the car make it beastly. I drove with full aids on since it was my first time, but I never got them to to kick in. The supercharger just makes the car pull. I didn't get brake fade, thank goodness. I just have ATE blue and SS lines in there. Lola did give me confidence to push and push even though I was a complete beginner. I also think I felt comfortable trying for faster mainly due to the structure and safety measures put in by the organizers. I would highly recommend anyone come down and do it. I still have another day to go tomorrow!!! This is my car in the morning after I finished prepping her. We had a total of four 86's out today. 20130629-TDE-MSR-Green by VictorN07, on Flickr Well The point of this post is to give you guys some data points on how the cooling system performed. Before we get to the goods I want to give y'all a teaser on how I mounted the Setrab core. As you can see I mounted mine in front but off centered. The core is sitting on polyurethane standoffs. This may not be the best placement by my thought process 1) The setrab core is getting fresh air 2) Although it is radiating heat into the intercooler, at least it is radiating heat into the intake side of the intercooler. There is still opportunity for the air to be cooled as it passes through to the other side 3) The exit part of the intercooler is unobstructed so that, the AC condensor and radiator still have open area to get air. 20130628-HomebrewOilCoolerInstallTeaser-001 by VictorN07, on Flickr 20130628-HomebrewOilCoolerInstallTeaser-002 by VictorN07, on Flickr Now that's out of the way. Let's get to the data! Thread is no good without data right? Torque was being a bastard so I only got a log for my third out of four sessions. Each session was 20 minutes. This was at 2:00pm and it was a blazing 103F outside. I think the in car meter read 108F. Pretty hot. The following a graph that shows my speed, engine RPM, coolant and oil temperature. I just changed to back Amsoil 0W-20 oil from 5W-30. You can see my oil temp maxed out around 240F. Coolant got a little hot for comfort but it did it's job. One thing I like to point out was during the cool down lap the temps fell pretty quick. It is a fairly technical track so there wasn't a lot of time to keep the RPMs up. 20130629-TDE-MSR-Green-Session3-Temps by VictorN07, on Flickr Overall I think this was a worthwhile modification. I think without the oil cooler I may have seen 280F on 5W-30 tracking it. I'll try to get some more logs tomorrow.

Definitely worthwhile there.
I can get to those temps on the highway. On the list of mods here. |

The Driver's Edge Day 2 Logs
I pulled the ambient temps off Accuweather, but I remember seeing my in car thermometer read 108 F before one of the runs. Quote:
If you look at my 3rd session from Day 1, you'll see that I've gotten faster on Day 2. It was less hot than yesterday but still hot in Houston. I had a blast driving more. Brake pads are probably glazed, brake fluid boiled, tires shredded. It was awesome! This made me sad. Red group Miata. From what I heard it was an issue with the fuel system. Flames came out from under the car and the driver/instructor could not see it. Fortunately another car was able to signal them and they were able to get out without injury, however the track fire crew wasn't enough to save the car.... (Image courtesy of Johnny)

Thanks for this post, I've been toying with putting together a Setrab based oil cooler setup and it's nice to see basically what it would look like. Being so hot lately I'm glad I'm running 5W30, but it has got me thinking about upping the priority of the oil cooler - engine bay is really hot, have to be quick to put the hood up or wear gloves (my drive home daily parking routine ends with lifting the hood to let the heat out of the engine bay and into the garage - and boy does the garage heat up quick!)
Looks like you had a good time and great first track weekend...which direction did you run MSR-H, clockwise or counter-clockwise? Did you take any video? I had signed up for this event too late and was on the waiting list - of course there were no openings made and I received the 'sorry try again next time' email on Friday. Guess I'll keep on trying to get a track day at MSR-H this year.... Sad to hear about that car fire, glad everyone made it out safe!
