Used Oil Analysis @ 51k miles

Clean bill of health! I'm happy with the results so far (mostly stock engine, just intake/exhaust, driven hard lol). Sample taken after 6k miles, great TBN so I'll change it at 8k next time.

Wait, you're not changing after 3k miles like everyone else that's scared to actually follow the manual recommendation of changing after 7500 miles?

Very nice. I've been going about every 5k miles on this car since I drive a lot of highway miles; my wife's nothin'-but-local short trips vehicle gets the 3k mile treatment. It ain't fear, it's caution, and probably over-caution, but I'm OK with that. I take enough chances in other aspects of my life..

Out of curiousity, what's an oil analysis cost? Never had one done, but you've inspired me...

@Th3rdSun the maintenance schedule was revised to change around 5000 miles. I'd go with the newer recommendation.

No it wasn't.

Here's the 2017 manuals:

http://www.toyota.com/owners/resourc...anuals/86/2017

Straight to the PDF, p.38 has 7.5k miles/months for oil and filter replacement:
http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/docum...T-MMS-1786.pdf

Edit: You may be thinking of when Subaru changed their service intervals to 6k miles/6 months across their ENTIRE lineup. So according to Subaru an STI gets oil changes at the same frequency as Crosstrek Hybrid.

I forgot to post the link: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

The test kits are free, just email them and they will send you some. The standard test starts at $28, for an additional $10 they will test TBN, which will tell you how much life your oil has left in it and whether or not you need to adjust your oil change interval.

for those that go a bit longer than the various manufacturer mileage recommendations,

are you changing the oil filter sooner than the oil? example being changed oil @ 8k but filter @ 4k & 8k?

I don't, but I always replace my air filters when required and I buy high quality oil filters.

I did a couple of oil analyses on my old 2008 Miata with Mobil 1 Full Synth 5w30 and a Mobil 1 filter. On the final OA after 9000 miles and running same Mobil 1 filter for the duration, the oil showed very "healthy" numbers. The TBN even showed that the oil could likely be extended out to 10,000 miles with no problems. On that car in particular, I saw no need to replace the filter at a sooner interval than the oil itself.

Addendum: FWIW, during that cycle, the car was driven through two dust storms, and throughout a summer where the temps were consistently over 100 deg. F.

I'm still on the break in oil on my 86, so it'll be a while before I do an OA on it.

Don't worry, soon you'll hit the Subaru extended service interval where you just replace the oil on a continuous basis since 1L/1,000 miles is acceptable oil consumption, boxers aren't so different from rotaries after all.

I'll be changing it the same time I change my oil, which will now be every 8k miles. I don't see any issues as long as you use a quality filter.

You could probably go another couple years...

or...

you could change your oil every 6 months/7500 miles and take one worry off your list.. unless you don't worry...
