I'm confused as to what they do with NA vs Turbo engines, but Average Toyota/Lexus buyer wouldn't care about under the curve.

I have this observation - own 16 RX, ~290/260?, porky curb weight. Was given NX loaner, ~235/258?, I'm thinking it must be a few lbs less than RX.
Yet with all that equivalent torque + lower weight, NX just felt underwhelming in acceleration. Not sure what it got under the curve, but RX feels a whole lot more meaty, even though C&D ranks them near identical in 0-60. I truely love the 3.5 2GR and I think its a huge benefit that they use it in Toyota lineup, assuming its near identical with the 8AT, its a pleasure in a family vehicle.

They also do this weird crap with IS engines where they detune between IS300 and 350...

Its a weird, extremely conservative and distinctively Japanese way to resolve problems lol. Somehow it seems to meet their needs/business.

So far it looks like in Lexus lineup they get turbo 4 starter, 2GR mid-range and the top dogs get the new 3.5 twin turbo im assuming will be trickling down to range topping/sporty models as needed.
For Toyota they get the tiny shit lumps for small cars whatever those gas sippers are, the inline 4 basic engines and the 3.5.
While everyone else is dropping their NA v6s in favour of meaty boosted 4s.

Still confused

Yeah that is pretty interesting about the NX turbo feeling underwhelming. Wonder if the transmission is poorly programmed. That's a common complaint with that engine in the IS200. Or as you say, could be the 2GR is just a really good NA engine.

Could be all of these factors together. The 8AT in RX is suprisingly quick and kicks down gears real well in Sports mode.
Another factor with RX is that its softer and it squats quite a bit more than NX, so the feel factor is aplified by that alone.

Re: new Rav4 looks better and pretty cool to the point that I'd consider it to test drive it at some point when we expand our family and need SUV sized vehicles for daily daycare duties, but I am afraid the mediocre power out of 2.5 would leave me craving for more - although around 200hp sounds intriguing. The previous gen, as far as space, utility and overall "appliance" package was very competitive with CRV, and head and shoulders above "sporty" CX-5. Still was an econo-can .

They nailed the look, but it's begging for the V6 from the Camry/Avalon. Almost every CUV I've driven with small NA motors (while lugging 3000+ lbs) has had pitiful acceleration.

2021 302-horsepower RAV4 Prime Reveal

A suprise by Toyota. If the battery is big enough, it will qualify for the max Fed/State tax credits, $10K in my state. Also, free parking and high speed charging for PHEV's at many places statewide. FTA:

“It has 302 horsepower,” said Hollis. “Let me say that again: 302 horsepower! That is 83 more than the current RAV4 Hybrid, that was the quickest RAV in the line-up. We project the RAV4 Prime will accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in just 5.8 seconds. Consider the bar raised.”

The RAV4 Prime isn’t just remarkably quick, it’s also amazingly efficient. It can be driven nearly 40 miles solely on its battery in a single charge, enough to cover many drivers’ daily commutes. Factor in its gas engine and the RAV4 Prime is expected to achieve a manufacturer-estimated 90 combined MPGe.

Surprised they didn't call it the 86 GT-HB
Suppose they could have gone with Supra badging for more exposure.

Guessing they wanted to create separation from other slower, less fuel efficient or less "green" cars.

Pricing could also be another surprise and in a good way. With Toyota's stated target of 25% of all cars sold in the US being either PHEV or HEV by 2025, maybe economies of scale will drive prices down.

BEV, good for some until you need cabin heat and range. If I made the jump, it would be to PHEV.

This is very intriguing, sounds like the perfect car to do what you don’t need your sports car to do...

And now it’s quick.

Previous gen rav iv was horrible. Current gen is mediocre. Wet noodle suspension. Pitiful interior. Mediocre seats.
