Agreed. I took a video and caught the CEL happening on my car. I've been pushing back and making sure toyota and the dealersip know all the issues and when they happen. My FR-S is now in the shop with no repair available yet here in Canada. Toyota Canada is really leaving customers in the dark...

Picked mine up from the dealership. The service notes indicate that they tested the VVT-I hardware and found it was working properly. The only real work they did was to re-flash the ECU and test the car (~14 miles).

Driving home, I immediately noticed when the engine is free rev'd, the RPMs drop back down to 600 rpm very slowly and deliberately. That's different than before. No CEL/SL driving home, but at idle, I can feel a slight shudder/off-beat cadence. My STI felt the same way though, so that could be normal.

Will put 400+ miles on the car in the next 4 days and see how it goes.

Has anyone thought about how it could be faulty WIRING or connectors going to the cam gear position sensors?

I noticed that a lot of people are getting the P0019 which is a specific corner. Replacing the gears/ECU/reflashing/swapping OCV's doesn't work in some cases. The only common thing other than the engine itself would be the wiring and connectors. I don't know, just thinking out loud.

Maybe the reason these fixes seem to work with some cars and not others is that the harnesses and connectors are touched/unplugged/plugged in/etc while the warranty work is being performed, and the accidental fix is actually in the wiring/connectors themselves. This would also explain the wide randomness in mileage people are seeing the issue as well as why some owners never see the problem at all.

I've spent a lot of time staring at both crimps and IDC under high magnification, and certainly people get both wrong, sometimes badly, but I would be REALLY surprised to see bad connectors in an automotive wire harness.

This is probably all done on an AMP-O-MATIC class machine, and again, it would just be very surprising to see poor workmanship here.

I'm not sure I would buy intermittent connectors in a high vibration environment anyway. But, who can say...

I really ought to be out burning some gas right now to see if my CEL comes back, for my CSR's sake. I suspect I'll be less cranky if I get this failure again BEFORE my crickets are taken care of, as opposed to developing some sense I'm in the clear and can finally try to love my car again, and then throwing another P0019...

Update: 5 weeks today. I called. Expecting new ECU tomorrow. If all goes well, I drive it home. I forget what it looks like. 4 days in the car, 5 weeks in the shop.

As per my earlier post, got her back after 5 days in the shop. So far so good...

Here is the summary of the work done from the invoice:
(this part seems to be the initial diagnostic from 9/27)
Code:
VERIFIED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, EXTRACTED CODE POO19 : CAMSHAFT POSITION CORRELATION (BANK 2 SENSOR B.) . MOVED B10CV TO B2 LOCATION. CLEARED THE ECM: AND PERFORMED TEST MODE A AS PER TECH LINE INSTRUCTION. RECHECKED FOR CODES AND FOUND CODE P0019 STORED. WILL NEED TO REPLACE BANK 1 EXHAUST CAM GEAR AND PERFORM TEST MODE A.
(this part seems to be the final diagnostic as of 10/2, FYI Tom Blamey is the Subaru field rep in the Sacramento area)
Code:
WAS CONTACTED BY TOM BLAMEY INVOLVING A REFLASH OF THE ECM.TOM BLAMEY INSTALLED REFLASH OF THE ECM-CLEARED THE CODE. PERFORM TEST MODE A AND RETEST DRIVE 43MILES TO SEE IF CODE WOULD RETURN. NO FAULTS OCCURED AT THIS TIME.ADVISE CUSTOMER TO MONITOR.
Any idea what "MOVED B10CV TO B2 LOCATION" means?

Means they moved the actuator valve from one side of the engine to the other. They were looking to see if the actuator was the issue. If it was you would have gotten a p0017 code. Since it got the p0019 code again they decided to replace the cam gear on that side.

Sounds like before they replaced the cam gear the field engineer came out and flashed the ecu instead.

Wow... the head casting issue makes total sense.

Big ____up though... If this is truly the case, then this is going to cost Toyoburu a bunch of money

Maybe not.. looks like the oil passages are in the timing cover.

Something was posted on the FB group about a source claiming there was a casting problem with the internal oil passages to the VVTi

As far as the picture... on the right is the oil pump housing, on the left is up near the cams

It would be interesting if new timing covers show up on the next TSB... haha
