It seems ordering really is closed for the BRZ. I went back to the two dealers who said they could 'order' a car and called their bluff, and... <sound of crickets chirping in the night>.

It looks like they would be happy to take my money and put me on a 'list' for when ordering does open again. But a definitive order for a car right now isn't happening.

Oh well. I'd like to get a new BRZ, but still love my 2019.

He wasnt the only one. there's been quite a few people who have waited quite a bit for their orders

I ordered Jan 6th 2022 and still waiting!! According to dealer's paperwork, I was supposed to be on January allocation (released info Dec 15th) and I wasn't!
Let's see what happens next month. Hopefully I'm slated for February.

I wonder if the dealer's in these cases dropped the ball or were pulling some kind of fuckery.

i havent heard of any, although it's definitely possible

i dont see why any dealer would drop the ball. that's a sale they are missing out on

"drop the ball" = making a mistake. IE, not intentional, vs fuckery being intentional.

The fuckery is the the dealership CHOOSING a higher profit vehicle with their Japanese produced car "slots". BRZs are low margins compared to anything else. Lower overhead/volume dealers are more willing to make less money on that order "slot".

That's ridiculous, I ordered mine in late September 2022 for a March delivery, and got word that it'll be here Jan 15th.

and cue my story.

late 2013. heuberger motors was a supporting vendor here. was constantly "pm me for the best deals, 25+ brz's in stock and ready to go!"

so i pm him. "i'd like to get a brz, i've seen your pricing and am ok with it, i would need to make plans to come pick up the car, is there any way i can put down a significant deposit for a WRB manual limited (i don't need the vin, any WRB manual limited will work, you've got 8 in stock currently) to ensure that in 3 months, i can come pick one up for a nice road trip/vacation experience?"

he replies with shipping options, and he can't do anything 3 months out, but would be happy to ship me a car. so i say 'thanks, the whole point is for the road trip/vacation experience with the new car, i'll check elsewhere'. he gets back to me blowing up about how he's been nothing but courteous to me, and doesn't understand why i won't proceed with the deal within the month...

car sales only matter in the here-and-now. if you're not buying the moment you're talking to them, you're wasting their time.

i was a guaranteed sale, with cash to cover the entire vehicle purchase price at msrp, and he blew apart every consideration i made for a guaranteed sale simply because i refused to buy right there and then and get the car shipped to me.

that's car dealers these days. honestly, half the staff likely doesn't really know if they'll have a job in a month anyways.

you wanted them to hold a BRZ for 3 months.. in 2013 when they FIRST came out?

You were a guaranteed sale... that he wouldn't see for another 3 months.

if you told him you could fly out within the month and pick it up, im certain he would have made it happen, but to hold a brand new model that the whole world was excited about for 3 months is a bit pushing it.
He can't guarantee that he'll have a car in 3 months, regardless of a guaranteed sale.

Him overreacting about you not wanting to get it right away is a whole different issue and he could have definitely handled it in a much better manner, but a dealer salesman cant hold a car for 3 months OR cant guarantee a sale in 3 months if he can't guarantee that he would have a car ready for you.

Really? Maybe this is regional, but anecdotally I see more second gen BRZ's than 86's on the road...although both are still very rare.

Our local Subaru dealers will at least try to order one when the ordering is open. The Toyota dealers around here won't order one and can't honestly tell you if/when they will get their allocations. Neither dealerships will ever have any in inventory which are not already spoken for.

I believe there were something like 11k GR86 sold so far in 2022 vs about 4k BRZ

Don’t quote me on those numbers, but overall even for the first Gen, there were far more Toyota branded units being made

Yep, according to Toyota, GR86 sales number for September 2022 YTD (seems that Toyota reports on a quarterly basis) was 9,691. Total sales number for BRZ as of end-of-Nov 2022 YTD was 3,020. Definitely more GR86 vehicles sold than BRZ.

Well, I had to order my 23 BRZ last July and didn't get it until late November, but the stealerships here are still taking orders. None of them have any on the lot to see though
