Post install follow up and public service announcement....

So I ordered two of the 2017 revised door checks and installed the driver's side today. I no longer have to back into my sloped driveway to protect my shins! Fantastic!

Why didn't I install the passenger side? Here is the public service announcement: The two studs tack welded to the door check are made out of incredibly soft metal and can easily snap when tightening the nut by hand...

Ask me how I know.

i'm doing the install of this next week. would it be worth it to throw a better tack on the nut or just be easy on it once it gets tight?

The tack did not break, the actual stud did. My guess (I was not using a torque wrench) is that it took much less than 20 ft/lbs of force to snap the stud... so take it easy with the two nuts.

Since these nuts do not bear any real load I would just snug them up and not really apply much force at all. If you want to torque them, I would not go past 10 ft/lbs <<< WRONG!!!

EDIT: as pointed out below, the correct spec is 5.5 ft/lbs.

The BRZ Shop Manual specifies 5.5 ft./lbs. (66 in./lbs.) for the door check nuts.

Without doubt the shop manual is the way to go if you have access to one, and you should always follow the manufacturers opinion!

And it does not take "guns" to exceed 5.5 ft lbs!

Did we do this?

The 2017 revised part is currently unavailable anywhere in the US, and backordered...

I'd be curious and it may help others, but in all honesty I personally will just wait. I fixed my driver's side, and rarely have a passenger so it is not that big a concern for me.

Going to pull them off the wife's outback when we trade it in. Worth a fortune on the black market.

Lots of recyclers/dismantlers that have them. No one ever buys those things at the junkyard

Probably like $5 if you pull yourself.
