Confirmed the next generation 86 is TNGA platformed with Toyota engine, twin turbo, 300-hp, built at the Miyata* Lexus plant. Suck it, Subar-goons!

I expect this will be in Jalopnik by Saturday.

*because irony

motoring.au or some Japanese rag needs to make it up before Jalopnik and the rest can copy it and claim "insider" info.

I figured the rags would have it featured tomorrow, then Jalopnik would come along the next day to whitewash it and provide a hint of authenticity. Isn't that how it works?

Nahh that's too generous.

It'll be:
-Shortened TNGA-N platform (used in the Toyota Crown)
-Dynamic Force 2.0L @ 200hp (via Yamaha involvement, 7600rpm redline) and higher output option Dynamic force 2.5L @ 250hp (via Yamaha involvement, 8000 rpm redline)
-6 speed transmission from the GRMN Mark X (or higher output version of the Corolla tranny with the imt downshifting programming)
-8 speed automatic
-2+2, a little bit bigger than the current 86 (for a bit more rear seat and trunk space)
-3 trim levels available (86 base (25k, fairly stripped down) , 86 GT (30-32k generously optioned), 86 GTS (35-40k the book of amenities are thrown at it)), more colour options.
-Toyota Safety sense standard
-Not a hatchback
-Release est. 2022

Have at thee!

That sucks, because it's confirmed. I read it on a forum.

Truly what is a realistic curb weight for a small 2+2 while meeting/exceeding Toyota/Subaru/worldwide safety standards?

Granted when I purchased my first brand new car in Aug of '85, the VW GTI was ~2000 lbs and I recall from car mags of yore that the Honda CRX weighed ~ 1800 lbs. Cars also had a lot less HP in those days- the VW was ~ 100 HP and a CRX probably 85). However the gearing was setup to make the cars feel peppy. The best was the4AG Corolla GTS engine at a whopping 112 BHP.

We know they can make the twins 2000 lbs using exotic material, so for those that whine place your deposit for the aluminum carbon fibre twin variant at $75K. It will be a hell of a deal but the economy of scale only works if all the whiners buy one. LOL

In reality it can come in at the old ~2750 lb base weight (MY 2013) up to 3000 lbs with the right content and it will sell. So, how much added cost can be allotted for reducing weight? Aside from innovation which we all know the companies involved can very capably perform, exotic materials still cost more money. Developing a forming process (as an analogy) that allows less steel to provide the same function costs development and tooling which requires contribution to ROI.

As Bones in the old Star Trek would say, "Jim, I'm a doctor, not a magician"

Why wait for them, it's more dun if you start them up and then let them roll with it.

i.e. They said they are looking at the 2AR-FSE hybrid powerplant, sadly with only CVT

In other, unrelated news, can anyone translate this?

I was given it years ago, some reference to Hamlet S5 A1?

The French built that car. It's called an Alpine A110.

I dragged my wife to an Alpine dealer on our honeymoon this past fall, just so I could look at/sit-in one in person. I REALLY wish they'd bring these to the US.

They had some other sweet Alpines there too.

(You can see my wife in the background, very clearly enjoying this detour )

bespoke platform (all alumnimum chassis) 2 seats (looks to be lightweight racing seats with a fixed back), not a lot of cargo space, only 2 airbags, 50ish K UK to start, 245hp engine.

apply those changes to the twins and you probably could save a few hundred pounds

And have a $60,000 car that couldn't be sold here anyway.

Oh and people would still say "too heavy and underpowered"
