Edit: /s just in case someone though I’m being serious

Edit2: Seriously the vast majority of 13s are fine. Most issues are extremely minor. I’d say the throwout bearing was the worst of it and mine lasted up until the point where I wanted to change the clutch anyway. Most mechanical problems are severely exacerbated by heavy engine modifications, like I doubt many stock 2013s suffer from blowing coil packs regularly, Even though they still updated the main engine wiring harness in 2015 to fix that. And yes they did reduce the indexing feature on the side windows so that the weatherstripping on the doors would last longer. So I replaced my door seal when it started looking a bit squished in 2019. It was still holding water just fine, I probably could’ve left it alone.

All in all, for the relatively minor inconveniences of replacing a sub $100 part maybe once a year, I wouldn’t think twice about buying another 2013. Sample size of 1, I know, but my 13 treated me right.
LOL. My 14 had the special water feature in the tails as well. It kept draining out though so I had to refill ever couple of weeks. The TOBs were sort of hit and miss as well. Some people had issues with cars that were built right up to late 2016 and other never had a problem so not really a first run issue.

I had the TSB for the windows done on my 14 as soon as it was released and never had a problem.

Would I deliberately go looking for an early 13 now? No of course not (unless it was much cheaper than a 14 up) but the whole idea that they were all plagued with issues is just silly.

If I buy one, I'll wait.

1) I want the aftermarket to develop. I don't want to be the one funding the tuning development and I don't want to buy things twice as better options become available.
2) I do want to see what weak spots pop up. How high are people revving them? Do the transmissions and axles hold up? Etc, etc, etc.

True, very few of the problems were strictly limited to 2013s. Many updates were made for 2015, and things like the TOB were only updated for 2017.

I think its a bit of a combination Tc.

~20% more torque and Toyota making their version into a drift toy (IMO).

I think definitely the mid corner loss of traction that is being reported is going to catch people out. Its what is catching out the Japanese vids.

The touchy throttle probably doesn't help either.

Well that will make @Opie happy since he can buy all those wrecks. When he sells the rebuild he can then buy and rebuild it again. Should be an endless supply if they are that horrible to handle.

There are fans of this car on these forums that have gobbled up every tiny bit of info on these cars from day one and yet never ever yet purchased this or any car over that time. Every bit of info has them teetering on a decision, but then they can be seen on other threads thinking the same way about the 400Z or MX-5. These are the same people who were holding out on the first model year problems first time around in some cases too. I wouldn't listen to people who are so enthralled by the details and purchasing differences from year to year yet never purchase. Not sure if that is "fake demand" or just the result of not enough $ floating around for a longtime fan to get one of these beauties, unfortunately.

I had a chat with a young lad who was driving one of these cars with an SBD turbo, Mishimoto oil cooler, some cheap coilovers, exhaust and aftermarket rocker panels and front and rear diffusers, CF ducktail. Paid $18K as is for the car from a used dealer and had to replace the rear bumper which previous track racer put big Honda holes in. This guy will get years of enjoyment with minimal work. Someone who wants less of a gamble can get a fair price on a stock gen 1 car and within a modest budget. And theyre cheap to maintain for the most part. So, there is a twin for a wide range of budgets for those that sincerely are willing to purchase. And if you live in a major city, you can get replacement OEM struts/coils and exhausts very cheap through social media since almose every modded car leaves unwanted OEM parts sitting around.

Anyone holding out on the first year this time around can read my lips: CARPE DIEM.

Buy first year, don’t buy, stick with gen1, sell gen1 to get gen2, does it really matter. I mean these are personal decisions and have no effect on our lives. So a gen2 may beat me at a light, big deal most Minivans will as well.

I love my 16AT for the DD that it is and have no plans on changing. If the Gen2 is the greatest thing since sliced bread after I test drive one, I will reconsider.

If I was in the market for a new car I would have no problem getting the Gen2. Looking forward to seeing them around.

LOTS of people BINNING IT INTO A WALL! Ahaha.

I mean seriously, there are some decent drivers we've seen on track immediately spinning out once traction control was off according to the videos out of japan!

I should start a poll with how many GR86 crashes we will see in the first year =D
I'm with @Tcoat here, that's a horrible take, this is the most predictable handling car I've ever driven with traction control off doing auto-x. I highly doubt the percentage of on track crashes are any worse than other cars taken on track for the first time for people like miatas, 300zs, 3 series etc etc.

If anything doing the pedal dance makes this car even more predictable without brake system involvement while trail braking and such.

Yes, but there are plenty of 16-24 year olds that will be wrapping them around trees and poles on the street. Just like when the FR-S came out.
