Canadian markup - let's speculate...

Anyone have a handle on what types of markups over US MSRP Scion/Toyota drop on their Canadian versions (after adjustments for differing equipment levels)? Given how long our dollar's been over-par I would hope any markup will be minimal for the FR-S....

At least with it being sold as a Scion we won't have to put up with sleazy bargaining tactics or big dealer-added markups over MSRP on rollout.

I've posted somewhere about this. If you compare the tC from US to Canada it's not too bad. But there have been a few 'dealer optioned' tCs in some Vancouver dealers that were over $30k though which is mind-blowingly greedy. But Jim Pattison Scion seems to be the exact same as the Canadian website.

When you compare between US WRXs or STIs and we get royally shafted. So that may be a plus for Scion sales vs Subaru sales in Canada.

Some dealers have a "No Canadian" policy, where they can't sell to us Canucks. At least, that's what it's like with GM, anyways.

Just have to make sure the warranty is transferrable/valid up here, and then this can work. I think subaru's US warranty is valid up here, but not sure about Toyota.

according to this Toyota is completely transferable from US to Canada while the Subies have to be taken back to the US for servicing or a bill submitted to subaru for reimbursement

however there isn't a scion to check

People have done it with first gen xB's and tC's. I've seen a few in Van with BC plates.

If you look at how much Subaru Canada rips us off compared to the US prices, you will realize how it has nothing to do with service or safety. Pure fucking greed.

I hate Scion's marketing, but hate Canadian Subaru dealers more.

I know for a fact that Mitsubishi will NOT honor warranties from cars purchased in the states. (had an 2010 EVO ready to come up that would have seen me save $10,000). Mercedes Canada is another one that will try to shaft you. I'm pretty sure you have to get those canadianized just to insure them here.

Its good too see that Toyota will honor warranties across border, because if the prices gap is anything more then a couple thousand, there is no way in hell i'm purchasing from one of these greedy bastards.

There is a difference in standard features... the Canadian tC gets:
-bluetooth
-splash guards
-carpet mats
-rear wiper

Plus, there are differences in import duties/tarrifs/etc. between Canada and the US.

Bringing up a vehicle from the states initially seems cheaper, but sometimes it can be a headache. In Saskatchewan, SGI (our vehicle licensing agency and auto insurance monopolist) requires all vehicles to be brought to Canadian OEM spec before they can pass a provincial safety inspection. So if you buy a lowered vehicle, it has to be put back to OEM height. Once it's registered you can do whatever you want with it, and swap the shorter springs back in. Stupid eh?

On a side note, I had a friend who brought up a new gen Mini shortly after they were released, and the safety HAD to be performed at the stealership, who dinged them a $2500 fee for a "grey-market" safety inspection.

So although it may seem cheaper initially, make sure to cover all your bases including warranty transferability, safety inspection costs, OEM standards etc.

Edit: also remembered there's a 5.1% import fee for any vehicles manufactured outside of US/Canada/Mexico.
