No, but sometimes you would think so when you were trying to spin the flywheel to start it.

The old John Deere tractors had a two cylinder, 4 stroke, gasoline engine and sounded like this (for you city folks).

there's always at least one at the covered bridge festival making ice cream. it fascinates me to watch.

how they just outright flood the carb in a pool of gasoline and hope enough of it vaporizes to get sucked into the combustion chamber to make it bang again amazes me.

the demo's on youtube are less interesting to me because they're somewhat polished.

i also can't find any youtube video's that relate to how old and cruddy some of the hit and miss engines i watch are. all the video's, they're hit-miss-hit-miss-hit, etc. the one's at the festival look like the person maintaining it has stock in axle grease, and smothered it on anything that moves. those run hit-miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-hit, etc. far more interesting to me i guess that they're running at all.

Most of the lube on early engines was rendered pig lard rather than petroleum products.
Up until the point that Standard started refining kerosene and they had to figure out what to do with all the black gunk that fell out of the process.

didn't they use whale oil for some stuff like that as well? at least on the coastlines. i believe the interior states farm animal derived oils were easier to obtain.
