The wheel and tire are still pointing in the exact same direction.

The wheel alignment isn't dependent upon tire size until you get to extremes, which doesn't apply here. The new wheel and tire are still pointing in the exact same direction. The alignment numbers he had/has shouldn't create ANY abnormal wear after only 500 miles. I am still betting on the tires being worn more than he believed at first, especially if his friend's WRX was running more camber.

edit- And where on earth did you read that he only installed two wheels and tires?

I also have tires/wheels from a friends WRX; 225/45/17 that are on my car now and are wearing perfectly, no alignment necessary. I even had 20mm and 25mm spacers installed for a while, again no alignment necessary. A Tire Rack tech I spoke to recently says 225/45/17 is actually a recommended size for the 86 in their vehicle info database.
I did only replace the ones up front. The older tires were put up front so i could watch how the tread reacted. The new tires will go on before the weekend.

The idea was that I didnt want to put brand new tires on there and have them go bald in a few thousand miles thus repeating the cycle.

Well then I stand corrected. I thought you installed all four, then swapped them around after you noticed the inner shoulder wear.

Tire size will not change the alignment... people need to look at things logically before just spreading info.

Alignments are done at the wheel, not the tire. Changing tire size has zero affect on the alignment.

The only thing relating tire size and alignment is the range of alignment specs you can run without rubbing.

guessing on here doesn't help, just take it to the dealer they will find the cause. May cost a little but better than making changes you don't need.

Okay, just saying that there have been a lot of opinions to try on here and none seem to come to fruition so maybe a mechanic or dealer needs to step in. Anxious to find out what the cause is.

I hear ya man. I'm going to the dealership tomorrow to get a 2nd opinion.

Though, I really do think that my judgement was at fault when I initially put the tires on and I didn't notice the tires being worn out like that. Which kinda sucks because I got the tires from my friend thinking I wasn't going to have to pay to put new tires on mine. Lol
