At the start of the COVID pandemic way back in 2020 when everyone thought this could be the end of civilization, the company I work for used it as an opportunity to slash costs by reducing headcount. We were all working from home when the notice went out that 20% of the employees were let go. The victims were selected apparently at random. They included some recent hires, some long term employees and even some department heads. None of them got any sort of goodbye.
And of course less than a year later HR is complaining that they can't find workers for all of the job openings they have.

This takes on a whole new meaning in the pandemic work from home era. If someone is sitting at my desk after I leave it means I'm divorced or dead.

I retired may the 4th, 2019. You still had to go to work.

That's what I get for being vague. If I am working from home, and my home workspace is occupied by someone else I am either divorced or dead.

lol.

I often wonder what my job would have been like if I stayed until covid hit. The county I worked for, which includes silicon valley, bragged for 30 years about being cutting edge of tech, and workers being able to "tele-commute" ( that's what they called working from home) and yet there was never a single case where they actually allowed it for ANYONE that wasn't the highest of executive management. Once covid hit, no one was allowed to go to work. Since I only had about 1 hour of actual work a day, I would have been on permanent paid vacation. I could have just cruised the Santa Cruz mountains all day, worked on my cars and house, etc.. Missed out.

I started a new job on the first day of our lockdown.. Only met 4 of my colleagues in the flesh. Got sick and tired of hearing the MS Team's ringtone..
