Is it weird that my dealer has refused to take a deposit? As soon as pricing was announced in November I emailed them my spec sheet and "got in line".

Someone talk some sense into me please. I put an order at my dealer for a Trueno blue, premium, 6 speed manual back in January and my allocation is coming next week. Turns out, it’s actually Track bRed. My dealer floated the idea to take the red and wait till my true allocation gets delivered and trade it in and make money on it due to the crazy times of buying a car these days. I already waited this long for my allocation and personally don’t think it’d be worth the risk to potentially make a few bucks. Plus I’m the next on the list for 2022’s and the first on the list for 2023 orders in case my allocation didn’t get filled this year. Unfortunately neighboring dealers that happened to get my exact spec won’t trade it either. I do want to restate that they are not forcing me into this deal at all and have been great to deal with all around.

Any thoughts from the wise here?

Seems like a lot of trouble to me, and don't forget about sales tax, etc if that applies. Either take the red and keep it (my choice) or wait until they have the car you want.

Sounds like the person that really benefits from the buy-trade-buy is the dealer to me.

There was a small window in time where I would have taken alternate colors. It was becoming apparent that I was going to miss the one big thing I wanted to do with the car this year (late July) so I was considering the hassle of doing exactly what you describe there if it mean getting a car for it. Now that window passed, any new allocation from here will be August or later so I'm back to just waiting for the right spec.

If you do decide to pass on that car though, let me know I PM'd you

Yeah - the big issue is the sales tax. If you trade it in, you only have to pay the difference, but you are stuck with the dealer you are buying it from as a partner. If you go to an online reseller, you will get the best price, but at least in Ohio, you are paying full freight on the sales tax.

"Best ever month GR86: 6,116" Confusing as this is the YTD Number For 2022. Toyota sold 1,306 GR86s in June.

I find it very interesting to look at Toyota's volume. Supply to build vehicles is definitely tight.

The people writing it probably couldn’t wrap their heads around 1,300 in a month being a good amount and were confused

How could Toyota be at >6000 sold YTD and Subaru only at 1663 sold YTD?

Just did an Autotrader nationwide search for:
new GR86 - 261
new BRZ - 35

Guess I thought there would be a more equal distribution between brands, but maybe not.

Man it's been a while since I've been on here.. a LOT has happened. I bought a supercharged S2000 2 years ago, and just recently sold it over the winter to start an Amazon business http://www.twoshade.com. Now I'm looking at trading in my low-mileage Lexus LS460 for a GR86.

I think it's partially because the BRZ front end looks goofy (to me).

Wow. I never would have guessed BRZ numbers were that low.

In other news, I saw an allocation for 2023 GR86 pop up on a local dealer website. So 23 delivery will start Aug/Sept in US.

Unfortunately can't check any of the details due to API being fortified against customer inquiry now. I don't know the actual MSRP to see if there was any change as they list the marked up "market price" on the dealer site.

Interesting. At this point if I could put a guaranteed order at MSRP in for a 2023, I probably would. Doesn't seem to be the way dealers are handling the GR86 so far however.

Eh MSRP dealers are out there. Just call around, tell them what you want to do. Watch for dealer add-ons - "mandatory" warranties and things like that.

MSRP dealers will likely have a line so make sure you understand where you'll be.
