I laughed out loud at work thinking about this.

AT BRZ vs 370z, then
AT BRZ vs m240i
AT BRZ vs Mustang GT
AT BRZ vs Camaro ZL1
and on and on, and the BRZ just keeps winning.

auto is 49 pounds heavier than manual
porsche pdk is 60-ish pounds more than the manual

its not a big difference and the pdk is lightyears ahead of this aisin auto unit in shift speed and logic. the next gear is engaged before you even let go of the paddle.

i drove an lc500 recently ... thinking the aisin 10 speed automatic trans would be as good as a porsche or ferrari, hell even an M3 DCT trans but i was let down. it rips off upshifts and downshift decently at redline. But all the inbetween stuff it falls on its face. full throttle upshifts at 4k (lag). half throttle upshifts at 7k (lag). 2 quick downshifts when cruising at 70 (trans gets confused sometimes give you one, sometimes both downshifts.

the manual trans in the 86/brz is one of the best in the market. as good as cars costing twice as much or more. the auto i guess is about as expected for a 30k car.

It may feel like one of the best. It isn't one of the best in durability terms, though.

Both things are even more true about the gearbox in an ND Miata

The naysayers may note that my next vehicle purchase (on order) will have a not 6, not 7 but an 8 speed, wet, DCT with paddle shifters. I look forward to embarrassing my lowly automatic FRS. I am sure that with one drive, one paddle through the 8 gears, I will lose all passion for my old car and sell it immediately on cars and bids.

why are we comparing a 30k budget/entry sports car with a Porsche pdk? plus whether lc or gr86, these aren't cars meant to beat anyone on paper, so who cares if they shift faster at lower rpms they are still going to be the slowest in class lol..so I would rather take the tradeoff with smooth tc power delivery. either way i'm getting a manual gr86. I had an auto frs for 4 years over 60 k miles and then a 2nd frs for another 6 years over 70 k miles and there's no doubt i've had much more fun with the stick.

I own two cars with the pdk, one with the Zf8 and use to have a Dct M4 so my standards for auto boxes are sky high. The unit in the Twins are adequate for their cost but subpar for performance driving. That is all.

Because it's all a stupid dіck-measuring contest.

As much as people praise a PDK.over torque converter, it has its cons.
Preselected next gear up, yes, but some idiot cuts you up on the road while accelerating and you need to brake and downshift. PDK os holding the next gear up, not down and that experience is horrible.
Same thing when reversing onto a tight parking spot, the pdk, dct are like switches ( on/off) and are so bad to manage with little creep..

As much as everyone claims to live on the racetrack and talk about these use cases, in real life PDK / DCT are not as good as TC on public roads and their ever changing conditions.

The auto vs dct thing isn't about performance or numbers. It's about a trans that does exactly what you want without delay.

Its not about price point either. Veloster N and GTI offer a dct trans which is more engaging than a traditional auto.
