Is this Rod Knock? (Video)

Hi all, so my son has a "new to him" FRS. 2013 with only 8500 miles on it. We thought it was a great find to get a low mileage car. He just had the oil changed the other day so all was good there. But today, he came home with this sound.

It started while driving home, and he just started hearing the sound, no sudden jerk or vibration as if something broke. It's an automatic, so no money shifts here.

I'm really hoping just something is loose, but it's coming from the drivers side which seems to be the problematic side for this car. Please listen to the sound in the video and if any of you have ideas, please chime in.

Thanks
Here's the vid:

Sounds more like a nasty exhaust leak to me.

Yeah. That's shot. I'll guess that the PO had the J02 recall done and sold it immediately.

Oddly, this car didn't die, just driving around 20mph the sound showed up and just got louder. He was able to crawl it home. It still drives (moves) on it's own power, obviously we're not going to drive it anymore.

Really hope Toyota is willing to cover this. This car has less than (9K miles) It's basically new.

That happens. There's a site where you can enter the vin to see if recall work had been done. Did you buy it CPO or anything with a warranty?

The car is 6 years out of warranty. Toyota ain’t gonna do shit about it.
Well unless it is a broken valve spring and the recall was not done. Then maybe. Just maybe.

On phone sounded like exhaust. On iPad. Yep that is toast.

There are no open recalls on this, so I suspect the recall had been done. This car production date is April 2013, so right smack in the middle of the bad batch.

Unfortunately, this was not a CPO car. Sold as is. My son had just totalled his truck, we thought we found a good reliable car. Guess not.

Motor is gone.

I feel so bad for your boy. Find out if the recall was done and who did it and take it up with them.

goes to show that mileage isn't the end-all-be-all in vehicle condition

I'm just wondering how a 2013 has less than 10k on it. That seems a bit strange by itself.
