60 MPH in 2nd - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I thought it might be interesting to note that the GR 86 will hit 60mph in 2nd gear, as seen in TheTopher's POV test drive. I think every video I've seen of attempted drag races and 0-60 tests have shifted to 3rd just before hitting 60. Do we think hitting 60 in second will reduce the claimed 0-60 times by Toyota and journalists?

Of course it will. That's why you CAN hit 60 in second.

Yep, has absolutely nothing to do with the drivability of the car. This 100% for a completely useless (in the real world) lower 0-60 time.

Gotcha - and totally agree!

I am curious if Toyota's time had included hitting 60 in second, because it seems like they haven't. In C&D's test I think they hit around a 5.8(?), while Toyota claims 6.1. All-in-all it's too early and ultimately not important. I'm just very excited and trying to gain a sense of the car prematurely. Hitting redline is going to feel and sound great.

Useful to know the end gearing with the stock tire circumference and if that changes per gear.

For autoX, it baselines and tire size changes you need to make for course setup.

Since this is a car that was primarily designed for work such as this, that is important.

From what I can see in first and second (I haven't found all the ratios anywhere yet), it doesn't look like an appreciable change.

Interested to see if these cars make it into an SCC2 or something similar.

According to https://www.tremec.com/calculadora.php,
at 7500 rpms with 4.1 FD and tire height of 24.618" (215/45R17) and the 2.189 transmission ratio in 2nd gear, the car should reach 61.2.

The 215/40R18 are even slightly taller (24.772") and reach 61.59.

Both are less than 100 km/h (~62.1 mph).

But that was with the Primacy tires that are 17" right? So the tire is less tall... if I'm understanding correctly.

See my calculations above, they were for 17's.

I am assuming he uses GPS to calculate speed and not the speedo, hence the need for the shift in reality.

That's because in the real world it's not really practical to smack the rev limiter and then shift. That will cost more time then just going to 3rd.
