I do wonder if there's anything that can be salvaged out of this for the DIYer. Was a very interesting project, to be sure. Bummer that it's not happening.

Doubt it, they supposedly had a bunch of investors look at it and say it's nonviable on a business front. They probably had some pretty expensive components and were going to find cheaper sources closer to production.

What we have learned is amount of work needed to make a totally "connected" car.

I'm not going to expect the price is something that could be done at scale - however, it appears that some pretty nifty software work was completed, and some hardware was sourced that does the job.

I don't expect the software to be open-sourced, but if I were able to get a handle on what parts I needed, where I could get them, and software to power the stuff, I admit I'd be tempted to give it a whirl. I could probably figure out the software given enough time and effort (and desire to make it happen) on my part, but... Maybe I'll get there some day.

Bummer that this got cancelled. I was hoping that I'd come back on these forums and see this project completed.

I'm still interested to know what specifically was so hard about the climate control to make this a non-viable option for the twins...

In case anyone else was still watching this, the website is still stating R&D stages. I just wish the pieces were actually available on Shapeways so that I could start experimenting.

Glad you're still paying attention to this. Did they ever explain what happened when they abruptly folded up and killed the original Braniac project? They were so far along and then out of the blue, Workshop12 posted something like "we were told it won't make money", and them boom. Dead project. From looking at the website, it looks like they reactivated with 370 kits some time ago.

Many twins don't have auto climate control. That was the killer application. So they made a list of parts (servos and what not) that needed to be purchased, but before this could be prototyped they seemed to have killed the project.

The list of parts is still in a dead thread somewhere (or maybe even this thread). I've seen it, maybe if I can find it, I'll repost it.

Seems to me the "easiest" solution for the manual controls would be to relocate the existing manual controls to the bottom or top of the stack and work with the space left, or engineer a smaller set of controls that would take up less room but are plug and play with the existing controls rather than trying to make the system something else.

This.

I mean, having the HVAC controls built in would be great, this whole Braniac thing is built on Android. That gives the ability to basically do anything your heart contents, including adding this feature later.

All they'd have to do is relocate the controls to below the tablet, in the factory pocket/USB location. Basically just make a mount and trim panel. Done.

I contacted Tim (Workshop Twelve) about the manual control issue and offered some thoughts. As the site says the automatic control is the priority but they’re looking at options for the manual controls, including a smaller tablet option. I’ll provide more updates if/when I get them.
