New Battery Time

Well, went to start the car to go to work Friday morning, and all the dash lights were flashing on and off, plus the interior light was diming, then brighter then diming. Didn't have time to deal with it so grabbed the Suburban keys and drove the big girl to work.

Saturday, car was completely dead. Opened the hood and the vents on the battery both had popped off. The Grimspeed battery tie down I have (the one that is aluminum and looks like opposing pistons) was half corroded but no other damage.

Trying to buy a battery in the middle of Independence Day and the pandemic proved to be problematic. The current battery (my second, an Interstate Megatron II, or something like that) had some warranty left but no place that sold them, including Interstate themselves was open. Since the warranty was down to the 10% discount level anyway, I went ahead and bought one at the Advance Auto near my house.

Went with a Diehard Gel Cell battery. We'll see how that does.

Installing the battery, the Grimspeed (which I cleaned up and wasn't too bad) wouldn't fit. Had to revert back to the original battery strap.

Well, I suppose it had to happen eventually if you drive enough.

I got rear-ended at a traffic light yesterday. Some guy(pretty sure under 25) in a beat up Buick that was more peeled clearcoat than anything else bumped me. I didn't see him coming so it felt harder than it turned out to be.

When I felt the bump I looked up and the kid had a look on his face like he'd just run over his mother.

There was no place to pull over where we were, so I just put on my flashers and got out to examine the damage. Turns out, there wasn't any, not even a scuff. He got out of his car and just kept apologizing. I told him "Hey, no problem, crap happens, just be careful".

We exchanged names and numbers just in case, but he still looked very concerned. He said "Man, I'm glad there's no damage, I'd hate to have to pay to fix a $60,000 sports car".

I just grinned and said "yea, that would suck, but no harm no foul" and we went our separate ways. I didn't have the heart to tell him my car was probably only worth marginally more than his.

At least he had the decency to stop and own his mistake. I was just talking to my coworker today who got side swiped yesterday while driving and the gal that hit her just kept driving. Followed her for a good mile or two before the girl finally pulled over.

he didn't have much choice. His car was literally an inch from mine, and there were cars behind him. By the time he could have backed up and gone I was already standing at his front fender.

Regardless though, he seemed like the type of person that would have stopped anyway.

I've been having good luck with the Turtle Wax Hybrid ceramic spray on/wipe off stuff over the last 6 months. There's also a wash product that "replenishes" the coating, whenever you wash the car. It's kept water beading on our outdoor kept trucks, in the hot as hell east Texas summer. I've tried all kinds more expensive paint sealers and synthetic waxes over the years, and this stuff works better than anything else, so far. Water beading seems to be the focus on most Youtube channels that test these products. I don't hear much about UV protection, but perhaps the two go together.

MPG Observations

My MPG continues it's slow climb upwards which I still find odd. As a reminder:

90% of my miles are commuter miles along the same path.
90% of my fuel is bought from the same vendor and station (Racetrac)
The tires have primarily been the same.
I drive my car the same. First away from the light, a little too fast on the curves.
My average speed along my commute is @50MPH with stretches between 35 to 65.

The car is averaging about 3MPG more now than when new. I have no idea why.

@Tcoat had a theory at one point that the increase was the engine breaking in, then it would eventually head the other direction as wear and tear took it's toll. At @180,000 miles I would think we'd be seeing the drop by now.

Thoughts? I mean besides "stop driving like your Grandma" because trust me, that would not help my gas mileage at all. She was the speed queen of the KY backroads.

A long stretched theory... but maybe you're slowly changing your style of driving without noticing, as it still feels like a habit? Over time, I have improved my driving style by giving the car a little more excitement, but I've also found myself using plenty of engine braking and such, that I still maintain an average of about 31.5 mpg.

I mean there is certainly no miracle to this, as the car wouldn't decrease its gas usage for no reason. Seems like you are just continuing to become a "better" driver without noticing, as it's long term.

Oh, I don't worry about it, I just think its an interesting observation, and something I didn't expect to see. I have always tracked my cars and trucks, and for the most part the trend is the "other direction" or you could see changes as maintenance was required.

Anything's possible, and there's always the possibility it's the driver's age impacting it more than the vehicle. I have been driving over 50 years (if you count not on public highways) but there still isn't much that passes me, or beats me away from a light.

As mentioned above, I don't see this with any of my other vehicles, but they average much worse MPG (almost half) so the 86 may be more susceptible to minor changes in driving style.

I wonder if it's wear related. There's (hopefully) a long trend line between new and worn out. As the car wears and the pieces become more intimately acquainted friction may drop as long as they remain properly lubricated. 55 years of experience suggests this doesn't end at 1000 miles. At some point the curve will probably reverse as wear becomes pathological. Yours isn't the first time I've heard of this. I've noticed it in several of my vehicles. Also noticed that on some auto publication long term tests performance at 40k miles exceeds that of post "break-in."

I'm curious. Do you ever use a fuel system cleaner/treatment?

Edit: Just saw the reference to T-Coat's theory. He beat me to it. 180k miles?? Maybe someone's pranking you. They are somehow adding fuel to the car when you're not looking for the fun of watching you go on about how great your car's fuel economy is?

Or, the car may just like you.
