autocross noob

Hey Guys, i live in Northern VA, around ashburn/sterling.
I want to try autocross.

I found multiple clubs and websites, which one do you guys recommend. Under 30 min drive from me would be nice.

Do i just show up with a helmet? i don't know how it works. I have drivers license and a car.

A walk through for a noob would be nice.

You’ve come to the right place! So in essence all you need is a car (loaner helmets frequently available). Because you’re in the DMV, the autocross club I recommend you check out first is capitaldrivingclub.com

CDC is a local club that has events in Frederick, MD, Waldorf, MD, and Winchester, VA. They are very novice friendly and social. You sign up online and then you pay in cash at the event ($40-$45).

There is also the Washington DC chapter of the SCCA (WDCR). WDCR is exclusively at FedEx Field. Their events are a little more structured and expensive but still great. I recommend CDC first due to the more casual nature but both are fine.

Check out the Bi-Weekly Meet thread in this sub and the local autocross thread in this sub as well. The BiWeekly Meet is great because most of us autocross so you can meet us and talk to us in person.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

autocross noob

FB post I made for autocross:

“If not, autocross is a super fun and competitive automotive sport where you attack a cone course (usually set up in a large parking lot) as quickly as you can. Autocross and specifically the CDC are VERY friendly to new drivers who are learning/haven't done this before and the FR-S/BRZ is a great platform for autocross.

FAQs and Answers:

1) Costs $40-$80 depending on club

2) There is very little wear and tear on your car (After 3 years I was still on factory brake pads, had changed fluids and tires for normal daily wear)

3) Top speeds don't really exceed 50 mph

4) Automatic or manual transmission is fine

5) Yes you need a helmet, no you don't have to buy one (they have loaners)

6)You are outside all day. Dress accordingly/bring water/wear sunscreen, etc.”

There are a lot of youtube videos on the subject. Good to watch those to get a feel for things. Cone language is probably the one thing to try to understand before venturing out. Getting an instructor when you're starting out will put you miles ahead.

When you show up make sure you tell them you're a novice. Most clubs usually have someone assigned to help out new drivers with course walks and how everything around the event works. You should also be able to find someone to help coach you for your first couple of runs to help get you started on the right path.

It's a little late this season but next season look into a novice school. The SCCA does the Starting Line school and most local clubs have something similar. You should get a full day of instruction from really good drivers and that will help a lot with getting better faster.
