That's only true of the AW11 MR2 and AE92+ Corollas (of which I don't even think that engine option was available for the U.S.).

AE86 Corollas never had a 4A-GZE from the factory.

Not so on Miata forums. The car is accepted for what it is.
Good point. I think the owner demographics are different for the two cars. Miata attracts more mature buyers.

The fact that it's hideous is only part of it. I'm also not a fan of manufacturers taking crappy econoboxes, putting turbos on them and trying to pretend they are sports cars. It's why I have no interest whatsoever in a Civic Type R or a Fiat 500 Abarth. It says to the world that the manufacturer wants a sports car in their lineup, but they're either too cheap or too organizationally stupid to develop one and think their customers are too dumb to know the difference.

To own one of those seems like it would make me complicit in a lie. Even if their customers are too stupid to know the difference, I don't have to be one of them.

Haha you want to see Miata owners lose their collective minds? Just mention body roll in one of the ND forums. It's like their version of the torque dip.

Anyway I used to be in the "downshift and drive around the torque dip" camp, but I've come to realize that everyone, no matter what side they're on, is right. If you're bothered by the torque dip, you're right. The FA20 powerband doesn't fit your driving style and the torque dip is annoying. And if you like downshifting and driving around the torque dip, you're right - it's not a big deal for the way you like to drive.

It's like turbo vs. VTEC. Some guys hate VTEC and having to downshift to have any power. Those guys are turbo guys. And some people love using the revs to make mediocre power - the slow car fast mentality. Those guys are VTEC (and torque dip) guys.

Different driving styles will favor different powerbands.

So it's okay for Ford to take the Mustang, throw a V8 in it and call it a better car?

It should be totally fine if we are happy with what we choose regardless of how valid is that choice with others. You may not call type R a sports car but it handily beats a stock twin in every driving condition, even those curves that we like so much. I am with you, I would still buy my FR-S knowing that slightly irritating fact.

I have the same traditional sports car concept in my mind but technology changed so much. They can make almost any shape handle very well now. I was making the similar argument by calling Camaro a muscle car rather than sports car in another thread. I had to face the facts. That thing handles very well. I love my FR-S since it makes me feel good by fitting the image in my mind.

Yep. I used to tell them to put a stiffer anti sway bar from a RX8 on their NC and shut up about it. Yep, $100 and a 1 beer job, no more body roll -

OR, have another large swig out of the whisky bottle, turn off the lights and deal with it in the morning.
