Thing is, 99.9% of the time, driving normally, bigtime power means nothing. However driving a responsive and lightweight sports/sporty car is *always* fun, even driving at 2/10ths around town. I love musclecars, and I love to go fast, but the only musclecar on my radar would be a 1LE Camaro. At 3800 lb., with massive wheels/tires, somehow I doubt that car is as engaging and fun-to-drive every single day on the most mundane missions as my BRZ is...

Anyway, last year at Palmer MA a Camaro two classes up from me *did* beat my time by 0.4 seconds, so yeah, they are faster...

The only other lightweight sports car I would consider as an alternative to the BRZ and a bit more to the "exotic" side is the 987 Spyder.

I remember Toyota using the 987 Cayman as a benchmark when we saw the European pics of the covered 86 at the Nurburgring. It was then I knew the car would be a less powerful "Cayman feel" car without the RMR layout.

Exactly! .

A less powerful "Cayman feel" car, but additionally a much lighter one! Only the 987 Spyder was on par with ours regarding weight, but with the expense of having no a/c , no radio , carbon-fiber bucket seats, a tent instead of "real" roof and other missing comfort.

I remember test driving a base cayman in 2010 and falling in love with the handling. Then I drove one after I got the BRZ and it felt more sluggish that I remembered. The BRZ’s lightness on its feet has ruined most cars for me. Power is nice, but I keep coming back to the BRZ/Miata. And I’m too tall to live with the Miata..

Damn that 987 Spyder is frickin gorgeous though. I’d take mine in Guards Red or Aqua Blue Metallic.

It is. The local Porsche dealer had a used one last time I was there, sales guy asked if I wanted to help put the roof tent on since it was starting to drizzle and it’s much easier with 2 people. That was neat, but I’ll take a proper cloth roof lol.

Still puzzled me that they would put a car with no side windows outside, but it was used and ‘used cars go outside’. Lol.

So you haven't actually driven one?

They are plenty engaging.

His point is more narrow - are they engaging on mundane commutes etc. under normal, traffic-burdened conditions? There are a number of folks over on Miata.net who find driving their Miatas far more engaging at such times than piloting the high performance machinery they previously owned was under the same conditions, just to cite one data source.

That said, personally I would like the experience of owning a high-performance car at least once in my life, and the new Z has me interested...

No, been driven around but haven't driven one. "Engaging" means different things to different people. I've been in and driven enough cars on the street and at the track to know pretty much what I like. Even a 3050 lb. 987 Cayman felt dense and heavyish to me. Camaro, Mustang, they're just not for me. Ideally I'd have a shorter-wheelbase, lighter-weight 2-seat FT86 for my street car. And a ~1000-lb single-seat track car

I’ll tell you something INCREDIBLY engaging and I’m shocked, quite frankly. ScatPack Challenger with the Dynamics package. Son and DIL just bought one so I’ve gotten to hoon it. MY. GOD.
After driving it, can’t believe I’m saying it, but there’s one thing that might get me out of my BRZ. Wide body Hades*****....

That's for sure, and here are three different examples. My C8, a friend's ZL1 1LE, which blurs the lines between a straight line muscle car and a track monster, and another friend's Alfa Romeo 4C, which shares more with the BRZ/86 than the other two. I think that driving any one of these cars can be very engaging, depending on what you're doing, and in different ways. I'm sure that most here will pick the 4C. It's a sweet set up for sure - his is set up more for the track than the street.

I'd never pick a 4C over a 1LE

I'd also pick a BRZ over a CTR!
