Obituary for my Totaled FR-S (with photos)
I was involved in a horrific canyon road collision on 9/30.
An a**hole was driving his Mercedes-Benz S600 AMG southbound with extremely excessively speed and lost control, went airborne and landed on my beloved FR-S while I was stopped in traffic in the opposite lane on the northbound side. He was taken by ambulance and is still in the ICU. The police faulted him for the accident and also cited him for speeding and unsafe lane change. He also totaled four other cars also traveling on the northbound lanes. I have no doubt that the Subaru/Toyota five star safety features on my FR-S (or BRZ) allowed me to walk away from the accident scene and live another day. My FR-S gave up his life to save me and I will never forgot all of the experiences I’ve had with the car over the past eight years. Now ready to purchase either another 86/BRZ or try a WRX Limited CVT. Last edited by hgamit; 10-28-2020 at 04:36 PM. Reason: Spelling Grammar |

Amazing that you walked away from that, glad to hear you're alright. That sure does sound like a freak accident.

Sorry for your loss, even sorrier for the dude that lost his livelyhood with torched truck and ladders scattered everywhere. FYI, the 86 and brz are built in exactly the same factory to the same specifications. There is nothing structurally safer about either model. Any difference is simply going to be in non-structural useless ranking categories that have no real bearing on real safety...

Sorry that happened, glad you are ok. Seems like a miracle.
Hopefully you are properly compensated, I'd say you are entitled to money for the fact you easily could have been killed. Good luck. |

@hgamit, glad you are OK. Hope everyone else pulls through as well.
Hate to see one of the First86 cars go, but it went in an honorable way. Better your car than you, as you said. Make sure to save some momento from it, like the dash plaque and center console plaque. Maybe take a fender emblem and the rear emblems and make a wall handing with it and one of the keys. We did that when our son's first car (a very used Volvo C70) was totalled and he still has it hanging on his wall. His wasn't nearly this bad though, it was more a paper total.

May have a 5 star crash rating but they don’t really test for cars coming down from above. Apparently they can even take that and save the driver.

I am happy you are OK, first and foremost. The guy driving the S600, well of course we want him to pull thru. Is it any wonder the guy driving the car Michael Richards (Kramer from Seinfeld) used to drive is a jerk (driver)?
Bye bye 86 #7. I am probably n the first batch for Canada and sure hope she doesn't end her life violently. Was thinking more of tucking her away in a barn somewhere eventually.

UGH! That was one ugly accident. Glad you are OK. I hope you don't realize any long term ailments.

Way back when there was a pic here of a Swiss(?) FR-S that went down the mountian side. It was smashed even worse than OP, and they were alive.

If you mean the Lava one it was South Africa and the driver was killed.

Frequenting this forum for the better part of 9 years on and off, I have read of several fatalities. Subaru is slowly incorporating Eyesight into all it's vehicles in an attempt to strive for zero fatalities. It is honorable of them, though virtually impossible to achieve until autonomous driving becomes commonplace. Just as I am in the process of purchasing a BMW M car (the opposite of autonomous driving lol).

That's wild. As much as I hate seeing accidents on these forums, I always enjoy seeing safety success stories with these cars. Glad you were able to walk away from this. I'm really impressed with what Toyota/Subaru did safety wise in such a lightweight vehicle.
