First part of the title is a big eye roller, but it's a good video with lots of very interesting info. Lots of things that aren't the usual marketing taglines, things even I've never really heard about.

Do people have issues with the syncros giving up on the first gen?

There were some yes. Is it rampant or common? No.

I also notice that the majority of these sort of comparisons are against 13s. There were so many incremental improvements over the run that even comparing a 2013 to a 2020 shows a large "improvement"

My 2nd gear has intermittently had a light crunch since new. Also going from 5 to 6 at high RPMS (like a hard pull up an entrance ramp to highway speeds - which in Houston are around 80 mph min). I've found it's best to clutch in and let the revs drop way down before making the shift to sixth gear.

Anyway yeah, neat video otherwise (watched a 1.75 speed). It's neat to see the handful of things that stick out to someone who's worked on these for the last ten years.

Yeah, I've had the same thought. There should be some "dramatic improvements" between generations separated by a decade, especially when comparing against the lowest-trim USDM version. Even the rollout BRZ top trim would have been closer.

Ultimately, it still comes down to aesthetic preferences. I know that by every measurable metric the new car is better than the old, but for me the GR86 looks good, just not quite as good as the old. To me "more mature" actually translates to more generic.

While the extra HP bump would be nice, The exterior looks so similar and I actually prefer the older curved dashboard of the first model so I will be sticking with my long paid off 2017 86 wirh 22K miles.

Yeah
AFAIK comparisons with early models (pre-refresh) represented those "large improvements"
While any comparison with the later (post refresh) models, those improvements just became small, because they've already been implemented at some level to those post refresh cars.

I'm sticking with my 14, especially since I supercharged it and it's long paid off. If I bought a later model, I'd move the SC or buy a new one. These cars handle too well not to give them that boost bump.

Finally saw a silver 22 BRZ in the wild. I have to admit my silver 16 BRZ looks so much nicer.

I'll have to admit, my grey 2020 86 GT looks better.

And a reason to get a first gen? (setting aside all the flaws vs the second gen)

They're actually available, and you can actually get them.

Unfortunately, in this crazy market, you may have to pay close to original MSRP (or more) for a 3-10 yo car with 60,70,80K miles on it..

Hopefully this trend will be coming to an end soon, but it is ridiculous..

this thread is a coping mechanism for folks who cant find a 22+ at sticker or cant justify or afford the financials of the upgrade to begin with imo.

This is the twin equivalent of "is the Cayman S worth buying over the Cayman Base"

I felt the exact same way prior to driving a 22. Wow my 18 is so aggressive, it looks so much better. blah blah blah.

Sold my 18' for roughly 22.5k, got into my 22 GR Premium for 33.5k OTD. My 18 was fully paid off.

I put roughly $18k down during financing, rest went back into the car for modifications, ppf, tint, etc. For the very marginal amount of money i spent actually upgrading to the new generation the performance and quality of life as far as interior features, just the way the car looks and how premium it is is beyond worth it.

I could not say the same thing for the many folks who got bent over spending upwards or over 30k for Gen 1 and 1.5 cars. That's just my $0.02 after owning a Gen 1, 1.5 and now 2.

If you're financing a gen 1 / 1.5 and you would go upside down into the deal for a gen 2, not worth it. However, gen 2 cars are retaining value so strong it's insane. The day i left the dealer with my GR carvana would have gave me almost $40k for it. Given this was roughly 6 months ago, the market is still incredibly strong.

Just depends what perspective you're looking at it from. I would NEVER pay over sticker for one of these cars. It's not hard to find one at sticker. Do your due diligence, call all of your dealers in your network, express interest and pick out the ones that aren't scummy.

Or just simply giving a straight answer as to why some actually prefer the first gen.

Love the frequent "Oh you are just jealous because you can't afford one" theme.

Good for you you wanted one and found it. That doesn't mean that the rest of us do.

The very title of this thread is "Any good reason to stick with 1st gen" not "You are a moron if you like the first gen"



EDIT: and it is hilarious that you still use a picture of your first gen in your sig line!

When I see a 2nd gen on the road, and I do my courtesy light flash/hand wave to them and the do it back, it brings me joy, means there's someone who used to own a 1st gen, or someone who just joined the family, as I do it for every car on the road that looks like it belongs to a car enthusiast.



I for one, am a person that unless I see a gigantic gap on the product that I own, to what new product is out there, I don't bother. Kind of like owning an iPhone and upgrading every year. Plus Im perfectly content, if anything, my next step up would be a car with a significant power upgrade, plus AWD.



I got yelled at, on another thread when I said that I love the look of the GR86, rather than the BRZ. Coming from owning a 1st gen BRZ, which I got instead of the 1st gen 86, because I thought the 86 looked like an angry catfish. Some folks were saying how they look the same, and is the same car. I like to look at my car as I walk away, and if I don't like at what I'm seeing, is not for me.



Well yes, the 2nd gens are, about 3 steps forward compared to a 13, and like a step and half to 17+. Not enough for me to make the move. I certainly could've because Carvana was, and still is, offering quite a bit of cash, because of their algorithm, the same one that has them on the verge of bankruptcy.



Some folks don't need to have the latest and greatest, now do they need to get it now because is novelty. Saying "You're just mad because you can't afford it" is just childish.



Now, if I was bashing the GR Corolla, you could certainly blame me of bashing it, because I can't afford it, and it would be true, because I could not afford, seeing how impossible it would be to do so. The way I see this thread is more of a confirmation that a 1st gen, for the mean time, is not completely obsolete, because you could have as much fun on either generation. So there's no rush to upgrade. But if you really, REALLY, want to have the latest and greatest, get ready to pay, wait, and this is what you'll get (Insert pros of a 2nd gen).
