Engine blew on 4psi? Causes?
So I literally just got a JDL turbo kit installed 2 weeks ago and barely started e-tuning with a tuner I won't name at this moment. The engine blew up while I was doing a 3rd gear WOT pull for data logging. Car is a 2013 with 84k miles and never had any problems before. The kit is...
GTX2867R gen2 EL Manifold Mishimoto oil cooler Delicious EBCS Radium dual catch cans Was wondering if anyone here could take a look at the log and help me figure out what happened. Was it a bad tune? Thanks |

How do you know 4psi? Your maxing out the MAP sensor in log so at least 5.4+psi or did you upgrade MAP sensor? When you say it blew up what do you mean exactly? Bent rod? Knocking? Blown gasket? Who did your install? |

Sorry forgot to include it has an omni 3 bar map sensor. Also on 93. Not 100% sure but makes some nasty rod knock noises. Turns over but doesn't stay running. Install done by revworks in Orlando

Your "tuner" WILL know.
Look at the logs. What excuses you accept is up to you.

Did you see a obvious issue in the log? I'm not too familiar with this stuff so I don't really know what to look for that's why I came here to get an independent opinion. Want to see if the tuner is trying to hide the fact he messed up.

Here is you log posted to datazap.
https://datazap.me/u/steve99/turbo?l...23-24-25-29-37 Now note that the manifold pressure max out at 1.37 bar or 0.37 bar over atmospheric. now this looks suspiciously like you still have stock MAP sensor in car or stock map sensor scaling. As its telling you max boost was only ever 5psi. Now i think that incorrect as you engine load and hence mas air flow measured by the mas air flow sensor continues to climb At about 3700 rpm you achieved 1.37 bar ie boost of 0.37 or 5 psi. Now the mas air flow continues to climb as you would expect as engine rpm rises. But boost is flat. now compare this to this avo turbo log at say 5500 its mas air flow is about same as yours but the boost is way higher its about 0.6 bar arround 8 psi. you keep going to 7500 mas air flows still increasing rapidly. id say you had a problem with the MAP sensor or its stock or incorrectly scaled in tune or just not reading correctly. Id estimate you got somewhere round 10 psi , also you got about -5 degrees knock correction over 6800 rpm. The ebcs relies on signal from map sensor to control boost, so it would not have helped. Also over boost cuts also rely on map reading. avo turbo log to compare https://datazap.me/u/steve99/mark-tu...&data=4-5-9-31 check you actually have 3 bar map installed check when you switch on car but engine off it reads 1 bar map scaling in tune may be incorrect, would need to see tune sensor may be faulty what waste gate spring is in you cannot use an EBCS to lower boost under wastegate spring pressure only increase. If its got a 7 psi spring the lowest boost is 7 psi Last edited by steve99; 06-09-2019 at 02:35 AM. |

There are a few things that will lunch a engine, the quickest is doing WOT pulls for "e tuning" on a fresh boosted build.
Not alot you can do about it now, pull it down, find out what happened, then repair/replace, learn from this lesson. Don't spend good money on parts and then cheap out getting it E tuned. A Ecutek tune on a dyno with a good tuner would have cost $1-2k, you would be pushing a safe 250-300hp and be doing skids now. Sorry mate, I'm not opening attached files.

This is the main reason why I will not do etoons, and will only do ecu calibrations in our dyno room where I can have full control to avoid situations like this.

It's going to be very hard to pin this on anyone. Installer will blame tuner. Tuner will blame installer. It's all on you no matter what, unfortunately.

If it was stock MAP and the scaling was changed boost would be capped at a higher value. If it was on stock scaling but a larger range MAP sensor, it wouldn't have a capped reading and would read lower boost. The 2nd is clearly what's happening in the log file.

how can be different scaling if the cars doesnt even start with a wrong scaling?
all seems good with psi reading on lower manifold pressure... |

Yeah agree most likely it was stock map with stock scaling. Map maxed out at 5 psi if boost target was say 7 the ecu is signaling ebcs to increase boost, and boost cut would not work if it was their. Probably a good idea to set up a flow maf based limiter as well incase map goes bad |

it doesn t look extreme this tune from that log, that seems all quite downpowered,
all is low, maf voltage and flow are low, boost is low, afr is rich and timings are low but still knocks there is something wrong like a exhaust or charge leak, can t really say but maybe he just got bad luck and spun a rod from nothing or bent something |

also, it can't be stock map sensor, it could NEVER ever reach 1.39 bar, stock sensor always maxes out at 1.37bar
just looked better at it, ok LTFT a bit off, could be tune related, but actually I do not see anything that is particularly off.... if it spun a bearing or bent a rod, i guess is just bad luck, shit happens |
