Crickets got burned up because of bad valve springs.

Short answer - as long as the cistern ain't run dry and the hand pump on the kitchen sink is primed, we have indoor running water, it jest ain't hot.

OK, so, since my car don't have the crickets, does that mean that my car's valve springs ARE bad and I should take it in for the recall??

Mine chirped for a couple days after the car sat for over a week. I think it was due to the small amount of gas that was in the tank during that time.

Crickets died the day after I filled up again.

Subaru updated the "cricket" TSB 09-54-12R on 12/10/18 to include '13-'19 BRZ. They put the most recent updated high pressure fuel pump starting with VIN J9603681. Part number for the newest high pressure pump is 16625JB022. Depending on Year/VIN at the most you would need the pump, drive case and a left side valve/rocker cover. There are no changes to the camshaft. I'm pretty sure you could bolt the newest pump up without any problems. The drive case and rocker cover changes are to help eliminate the noise. The following is a quote from the TSB.

"This bulletin provides a procedure to address customer concerns of a high-pitched “chirp”, “squeak” or “cricket” sound heard coming from the engine’s Direct Injection (DI) high-pressure fuel pump. Not all DI pumps may exhibit this sound. Some vehicles may have components which in combination with certain fuel temperatures and / or formulations, may result in aeration of the fuel within the body of the pump and cause this sound. This result is non-detrimental to the vehicle. Production changes have been made to eliminate the source of the sound."

It's just an annoying noise...

Is this something a dealership would do for free? Like is this under any sort of warranty? I don't really care about the crickets but I'll take free updates lol. Or are MY17's up to date with this part? I bought mine in early 2018 if that matters.

I suggest you contact your dealer and ask them.

A TSB usually just shows how to do something.

The adverse condition must exist in your car before they will usually do anything about it.

My take, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

If you're still inside 3 years/36,000 miles everything(mostly) is free. They will need to duplicate the noise, so if your car consistently chirps you're good to go. If it's intermittent it'll be harder to get them to replace it.

Somebody needs to look at why some of the TSB fixes worked for some and not others. I definitely was chirping and after the fix, it's gone.
Maybe it's something weird like a screw too tight/not tight enough somewhere in the process? There's a reason that it works for some and not others.
I can't believe nobody hasn't pinpointed where the noise originates from exactly.

Well now, as mentioned up above:

"Some vehicles may have components which in combination with certain fuel temperatures and / or formulations, may result in aeration of the fuel within the body of the pump and cause this sound".

ALL you have to do, there, @Impureclient is to sort that out and you have your answer -

HINT: the HPFP is a mechanically driven, positive displacement, high pressure, liquid pump.

Soooo, -
