On an interstate it really does not make much difference whether mountains or not. I-10 is considerably longer though as it swings much further south. I would take I-40 and visit the Grand Canyon at a minimum.

The section of I-40 west of Asheville thru Smoky Mountain National Park should be one of the highlights of your trip.

Yes. I drive from STL to SC every three months or so and go I-40. This car is amazing along that really twisty stretch in TN/NC and the view is beautiful. Be careful though because NC cops are no joke--got my only ever ticket (15 over) right in that area and it cost me about $400 to fix it long distance. I tried to explain very respectfully that I felt safer coasting and not riding my brakes but the HWP didn't buy it

I've slept in the car and the boyfriend has too while taking turns driving but I would not call it comfortable. Pillow is a necessity, and forget it if the car is moving and the road isn't freshly paved.

This is a must! I just have the cheap Zeta one because I can flip it around and still easily access cup holders while using the armrest, and plug the radar detector into the 12v.

I just finished a 3000 mile trip in mine. My wife had just had shoulder surgery and we were both plenty comfortable. We spent most of our time up in the Smoky Mountains. Had an awesome time. She was able to sleep in the car comfortably.

I drove a 800 mile trip a few weeks ago, and while that isn't as long as you will be going, you can usually tell how a trip is going to be within the first three hours.
The FRS is confortable for long trips, as long as you are already use to how the car drives. Bad roads will be bumpy, but it doesn't bother me in my daily driving, so it doesn't make a difference in long distance driving.
My husband snoozed in the front seat comfortably (after turning the headrest around and putting a pillow behind his head) from a semi-reclined position.
If you aren't very big, you might be able to use the trunk to lay out.
