I got sick of the turn signals falling out so I 3d printed some new ones.
Switched to a nameless muffled track pipe, looks nicer.

Took the car to Road America and thought maybe I'd use up my old Toyos (Since I wasn't sure how many events I'd make this year I didn't buy new tires at the start of the season), bad, bad decision. Not only were the tires horrendously slow, the tire on the right was after only 2 sessions, totally worn plus it broke a belt or something.
How my car sat for half the weekend. Ended up trying some crack...I mean slicks as that what was available at the track. OMG the stupid stuff one can get away with on those With the added airdam on the splitter I have lots of thoughts on the Aero package. I found some cant(leading edge higher) in the splitter which probably negated any downforce and likely created a lot of drag. I have since fixed the splitter. It also turns out that even though I took a bunch of AOA out over the course of the weekend I still likely had too much. Despite the increase in cornering speed I was losing 1.5 sec. worth of top speed from turn 14-5. In talking to people much smarter than me, and have done the CFD work, there just isn't a ton of downforce to be gained from a smallish splitter. I'm contemplating abandoning the splitter all together and focusing on other areas such as blocking off the turn signal areas and the edges of the grill to reduce drag. Unfortunately I hacked up the bumper quite a bit to make the splitter so it would require a new one. All of this is pending more testing with the fixed splitter, so no decisions yet.

Finally, finally, made it down to Autobahn country club, running the full course.
Rained during lunch time but otherwise had a good time. Fun track and I'd love to go again and beautiful fall colors both there are the trip there and back. With the splitter angle fixed and a rear swaybar change the car was handling awesome again, really disappointing I didn't get to drive more this year. Turns out driving on slicks in the rain is pretty, nay really, sketchy. Only part of a lap then my gopro died. You can judge my lines all you want but I was trying to find grip anywhere I could, finally started to figure it out toward the end(not on this video). Dry Run, well mostly, it started to drizzle at the end. First time there so I was still feeling out the track, curbing ect. Still never felt like I nailed 13, 14,15. That about wraps it up for this year. Hoping to make a lot more events next year without the 'Rona ruining everything.

Have you considered adding diffusers to the front splitter to increase its efficiency? Next up would be dive planes, but well placed diffusers can really make a small splitter punch above its size.

Good suggestion. I have looked into it a bit but I just don't think my splitter is large enough to support them. If I trace it out there isn't much left holding the splitter together and I'm afraid the ends could break off. Then again it's only plywood so it might be worth a try.

I really wanted to make some space in the garage and get my old blown motor out but I also wanted to have some fun with it. A few buddies and some beers later and here is what I found.
First, it spit out 5 or so rocker arms, I though this was really weird and don't really understand why unless it has to do with lack of oil pressure. I pretty sure something is missing. Found it. Rainbow spec rods and custom rod bearings with built in thrust surfaces!!! Good stuff!

Couple of quick updates.
New seat mounted. It's on sliders for now but it sits a inch or two taller than my old seat so I might end up scraping the sliders. Picked up new mounts for the splitter. The old setup was ok but it still took me a couple minutes to get the splitter on/off. This has the promise of reducing that to seconds.

Those engine pics are hideous! Nice build thread. I have done some similar things with mine. Home made roll bar and splitter/diffuser with nine lives wing.
I started with the splitter and diffuser and had the opposite problem. A very loose car and scary to drive at the limit. I broke down and bought a nine lives wing and it made a huge difference at 5 deg. AOA. I would suggest going bigger with a new splitter because they can be effective. I am running 1 degree down in front but haven't tested enough to determine if that is the optimal setting. Your design looks good to me. My aero package seems to be good for 2-3 seconds at Barbers and Road Atlanta. |

Reading back on your thread and I had the same issues. I broke the mount in the center of my splitter where it mounts in the back and it was canted upwards. Car turned into a draggy understeery mess no matter how much I took out of the rear wing. I also noticed coolent temps went up about 10F.

Finished the splitter, I'll have to get a video of install and removal. Much easier but it still required a bolt on each side near the tire.
Switched to Falken 660s this year. They seem similar to the RE71R but a little more progressive imo. Easy to drive Took the car up to BIR for an event called the Proving Grounds. It's a standing start time attack. 1st in class and 12th overall behind a bunch of cars that all had 2-3x the power. I think this is the best the car has ever felt. I have to do some more data analysis to understand if/how much the new splitter really made a difference. Overall lap times were not quicker but conditions were not optimal, 90* and a ~12mph headwind at the fastest part of the track. I was losing 3-5 mph there vs wing only and I don't trust that was only due to the splitter alone. Unfortunately I had the wrong settings on the gopro so it's almost completely washed out. This is extra frustrating as this was my fastest run which was DQ'd for supposedly putting 2 wheels off. I would have loved trying to figure it out as I'm confident I didn't touch more than a blade or two of grass. Road America in a couple weeks.

Road America went ok, it rained pretty much all of one day. The new splitter gained me back a couple of mphs in the straights so that was somewhat of a success. The car continued to feel great however I'm starting to build enough evidence that the aero for the tracks I run at is pretty much a wash. Road America is very long and the drag penalty is just too much in the straights to over come the rest of the track.
If I decide to stay stock I may remove the aero and go back to the trd style rear spoiler. Which brings me to the next post......

I'm now tentatively working toward a K24-swap.
*If* this goes down I expect roughly 2 years to complete, a little bit of that is the financial aspect but primarily just time to complete it. I don't want to run into a situation where I miss events due to the car being incomplete. I'm also anticipating being quite busy with work and family over the next year. Thus, the plan is to prep the engine this year, acquire parts and make what I need over winter and 2022 and swap in the fall of 2022 to be ready for the 2023 season. That sounds really far away but I'm sure it will move fast. My goals for the swap are <2500lbs and >220hp, both seem attainable. Step 1 complete from an '06: Once I can verify the health of the engine I'll start shopping, on the immediate list; 50* VTC gear PRB oil pump kit any other maintenance items I think I'll need once I open things up. New alternator and tensioner EP3 idler pulley I started with IF because I may still get sticker shock at some point and decide it's not worth it. For now, full steam ahead.
