Had a 95 4Runner that had over 250k miles when the wheel bearings, rear axle and seals and lotsa other stuff finally went out.
I had made a decision to not put anymore money into it and just run it into the ground. The engine was dying...and transmission were slipping a little bit and its brakes were going too... I bought it used on the cheap and got about 3 years of relatively low cost use out of it. Was sad that it died... About a week after it died...I bought a 2013 Trail Edition 4 Runner...Black on Black... That thing is AWESOME! I totally recommend old and new 4 Runners...super SUVs that are actually built on a truck frame. You will LOVE it! If you are going new...the Trail Edition is awesome (but kinda over priced...but I still bought it lol). Limited is kinda luxury. SR5...best bang for the buck by FAR! If you go used, just buy it like you buy any used car. Compare VIN number on panels (to verify no wreck). Turn on A/C to ensure it works...check alignment..tires (they can be pricy...but it can also be an excuse to get nice new wheels/tires too) Anyway they are awesome. EDIT: LOL just noticed you are in Seattle. I got my Black TE 4Runner from Toyota of Seattle. Very nice showroom and the sales people were nice. A salesman named "Arson" helped me. Very nice guy. |

I had a '96 4 Runner, supposedly it was kinda rare. It was a 4 cylinder, 5 speed, 4x4; pretty much a base model with roll up windows. I think the only "option" was hvac and a crappy cd player a PO installed. Awesome truck, I bought it with 150k and eventually sold it with almost 200k on it... There was an issue with the driveshaft (can't recall the details now), and some broken clips on the dash from when a crackhead stole the crappy cd player. As a student I didn't have the cash to fix it the driveshaft issue. I sold it for about what I bought it for to a truck driver that was taking it to Venezuela.
Great times in that truck, took it to the beach a LOT, made some cool friends, etc... Wouldn't mind picking up another if I ever have the space/funds..

Wife and I are thinking about selling the CRV to pick one up. We've been tossing the idea around for quite some time. I like the offroad capabilities, and it'll tow the boat easily.
She likes the fact the rear window rolls down lol |

Contemplating whether to get the CRV or the 4runner. The CRV has better mpg but the 4runner is a beast in the snow...

CRV is a beast in the snow also. We honestly just need something that can tow our boat. I'm tired of having multiple vehicles for different purposes |

Living in the Midwest is tough, you think the CRV is a better choice for practicality?

4Runner is an SUV
CR-V is a crossover (read as tall station wagon) 4Runner is based off of a Toyota Tacoma CR-V is based off of a Civic platform (weird huh...always thought it was Accord platform) As far as MPG... CR-V>4Runner by a lot The 4Runner is a way better Off-Roader due to being RWD and having 4WD. The CR-V is FWD or AWD. Both are great vehicles. One is a true Off-Roader. One is a great grocery getter in an an urban environment. If you have to tow... The 4Runner is way more capable than a CR-V. So ask yourselves these questions.. Will you need to tow? Will you need to go actual off-road (not dirt road...OFF ROAD)? Will you need a "bigger SUV"? If you answered yes to any of these...get the 4Runner. If you answered no to all of these, then the CR-V probably makes the most sense. No sense paying for something you won't need or do. Both are great. Both will go 250k miles with regular maintenance. Both come from car makers that stand behind their product. Honda and Toyota aren't going anywhere, so parts will always be available for both vehicles. Neither are Land Rovers...(which is a good thing). |

buying a 4runner
CRV is better... As long as u can endure the gutless engine, it will be better If you use it mainly in the city. 4runner is more capable in everyway thou. Just Honda quality still trump Toyota for me.

Both are capable in the snow, but the 4runner is better in every other performance aspect. Also, the crv is 4wd, not awd. The transfer case is actually attached to the transmission
