The key thing to remember is there's active and passive radar/lidar devices.

A detector is passive.

A radar jammer or laser shifter is active.

In the US, radar jammers are banned by the Federal government. Laser shifters aren't banned federally but banned at state levels. Detectors are only banned in Virginia and Washington DC.

Ha! Didn't know about DC. Not a game-changer for me, as I live in VA, but good to know.


VA is at least decent enough to put up signs at state borders "radar detectors illegal".


But DC just does not like to reveal stuff, nobody knows at what speed their speed cameras are triggered (in MD its 12mph above the limit) I think even their traffic law cannot be found online.

Yes it really depends on location for example Sacramento Police can't write you a citation for speeding in Los Angeles, but....they can turn on their lights to pull you over in Los Angeles and then call into LA PD or CHP to meet up and have them write you the ticket instead. Its up to you to fight it in court after that. Had a friend that it happened to. Kingsburg officer was in Fresno for whatever reason, pulls over friend for speeding and then calls in CHP to take over after giving CHP account of why friend was pulled over. Got ticket from CHP for speeding.

The initial officer in that case is effectively making a citizen's arrest at that point, though, under color of law. He can hold you there until an officer of the jurisdiction arrives- whether it be a CHP officer, as in the above case, or a general police officer of the jurisdiction.

Most of the cases that have come up in this area, allow a good amount of leeway to officers when it comes to jurisdictional issues- at least in Cali

How would this play out in traffic court? The CHP officer did not personally witness the alleged violations, wouldn't they have to subpoena the Kingsburg officer to testify?

^ I've been ticketed by state park police on the highway. He didn't have radar but supposedly they do get their speedometers calibrated once a year. It was at night and he followed me for a mile before pulling me over.

I got pulled out of a line of traffic on I84 in CT last year and got ticketed so rolling with traffic theory doesn't always work.

Yea, pretty sure pacing tickets hold up in court.

I got one here in NYC but I noticed on the ticket it was wrote in one spot paced and another clocked. But NYC proper doesn't do plea bargains so I hired a lawyer and that ticket got dismissed. I still got some others that are based on "observation" but not getting those 6 points helped a ton.

City/County police have jurisdiction in their city/county, including highways that run through it.

CHP (California Highway Patrol or similar "highway" officers) have jurisdiction on all highways. A highway is basically any road.

Thus, their jurisdictions overlap and both can pull you over if you're in their jurisdiction.

Pulled you over. Meaning he lit you up and you stopped. Did you get a ticket? Was he legally allowed to? Or was he just mad and put his lights on and you stopped? I tried looking up these things but couldn't find any useful information through google. I doubt just any vehicle with lights and sirens can legally pull you over. That's what I'm trying to find out which ones can.
