Most likely coincides with the autoshows that are usually held around the time of the unvieling.

Sienna/Venza could have likely been unveiled during the New York Autoshow (April)
gen2 86 could be North American International Autoshow (Jan) or any of them around that time.

Pre Covid news. There is plenty more of the same.

Alternative interpretation:
Covid causes a dispersion from the cities, people stop using mass transit and ride sharing, and much of the WFH becomes semi-permanent. Economy recovers, and people still have/want to travel to various things, and don't want to take public transit/ride share/taxi if there is any. Thus, the automotive industry may enter an unexpected renaissance.

The cheap commuter car may make a resurgence in that scenario. Why do you think that the huge focus is on hybrids right now?

Yes sure. Look at the millions they have sold to the general public so far. Makes Corolla or Prius sales looks like trash.
Unfortunately you can try to spin it positive all you want it isn't what the majority wants and will not be high on the list of new cars released.

Unless...

It is made into something that the general public DOES want in which case most of the people here will hate it.

You are so right. Toyota got involved so their name wouldn't remain synonymous with toasters. That for the most part is the only reason. Subaru got to fill surplus production capacity and might have brought a few more loyal Subaru buyers into the fold in the process. Subaru does have incomparable brand loyalty, once they win you over. Especially in places where efficient AWD is really useful.

Without Toyota's size and finance and Subaru's manpower, none of this would happen.

Cars built purely for profit aren't sports cars at the lowest price point generally. That's a tough proposition no matter what. It's not like the 90's when consumers bought 4 sporty Toyotas, Paseo SR5, MR2, Celica GTS or the Supra.
Al Gore and a lot of other factors change things. Market demand is for a Swiss Army knife vehicle these days. That's why Ford is dumping sedans. Specialty vehicles, sports cars, offroad etc are a very small minority these days. And things cost a lot more to build. We all know about economies of scale. If Toyota sold one vehicle only it would probably be the RAV 4 for North America.
