Red Steering Light

A few months back while turning off of a main road into a smooth entrance I had a power steering failure and ironically it was trying to hold the wheel in place rather than not add assist. I turned the car off and when i parked and turned it back on and all was well. 2 miles down the road it happened again. After that, no issues.

This morning randomly the car dings at me and i see a steering light while about to pull out of my drive way. It goes off before I actually make the turn onto my road and I never feel a change in assist.

Is this a known issue? I just replaced the battery in the car last night so i expected one or two random things to appear but not this. The car drove perfectly fine the rest of the way in to work today. There is no history of hitting a curb or large potholes or anything along those lines.

This seems to pop up now and then but nobody has ever really had a satisfactory explanation for it. The most common know condition was an overheat situation but that doesn't sound like it applies to yours.

There was a recall for steering in New Zealand but it was a very specific set of conditions involving connectors and knee airbags that we don't have here so it does not apply.

I would take it in and have it checked but would not be hopeful they will really find anything (based on past reports).

overheating seems odd. I've driven thru the dragon multiple times without issue but sitting in traffic in the rain when its 70 is when the first issue occurred. this morning it was 48* and the car had been running for about 45 seconds.

Exactly why I said it didn't sound like your issue. Just brought it up since it was one of the few "known" causes. Could be as simple as a lose connection someplace.

In all seriousness though as a long time mechanic sounds like a wire in that system that just randomly isn't making a connection. I know its not a good answer but those are the things that keep us up at night because we cant figure it out.
