Majority of its time it's mining, unless I'm gaming on it ... which I don't do all that often anymore. Still, its nice to have the capabilities to game when I feel like it.

Cryptocurrency is created by basically solving difficult math problems for very large or very precise numbers. These problems don't have a straightforward answer, so computers solve them using a numeric process and iterating many times. This is called mining in cryptocurrency speech. I understand the techniques to be similar to cracking encryption cyphers.

Bitcoin is a specific kind of cryptocurrency. There are others. Just do a search on how to get started and do some research.

As others said, it can be done at home, and is the reason there are runs on GPUs at times, as the software uses them.

It takes energy and power to do it quickly, but a standard computer can do it, it just takes longer.

Currently Ethereum is the most profitable coin to mine.
If you're a casual miner like me, Nicehash is a great way to do it because Nicehash pays you Bitcoin for your mined Ethereum .. or rather Nicehash pays you for your hashing (mining) power.

Depending on the day, I can get $8-$15 per day with electricity costing me $1.50 ... and that's in California with $0.28/kw.

I started mining with my rtx 3080 around Jan and I've mined a total of about $750 or so from it since then. I've already sold out to lock in my earnings.

Still, the tax will be costly. Mined earnings are subject to income tax, and upon selling the crypto subject to short/long term capital gains taxes. At least that's what I've read so far during my preparations for taxes.
