Quality will probably go down even more with cost cutting needed to survive... eh. I'm not thinking good things about this car.

That video has some weird ideas of how the alphabet works if they think that is A to Z.

I truly hope they're able to pull through, and produce a new Z. But hemorrhaging so much money, it's a question if they can even survive at this point, much more come up with the cash to develop what will be a niche specialty sports car that would only have a trivial impact on sales. They need big-selling mainstream cars (= SUVs and Crossovers), not a sports car.

I (selfishly) hope they do it anyway.
They have three vehicles in the top 25. They can be profitable if they restructure. While the GTR provides brand confidence and enthusiasm, the Z car is attainable and injects some excitement into the brand. Toyota has the LC500, Supra and 86. Honda has the NSX and CTR. Ford has the GT and Mustang. Chevy has the C8 and Camaro. I don’t see Nissan dropping the Z, and if they do then they risk being the next “boring car company” like Toyota got labeled.

The silhouette is very promising, and if it comes close to what Drive describes based on "rumors" it should be a contender at under $40K.

A limited-slip differential, adjustable suspension, and a manual transmission are also things whispered to be in this car's feature set.

I think the "under $40,000" price range is pretty optimistic if it comes equipped as guessed.

It *looks* pretty sweet as far as appearance.
But I'd infinitely rather they made a lower-performance either N.A. 6 or turbo-4 Z about the same size/weight as the FT86, but 2-seater with shorter wheelbase and 50/50 weight distribution. That's what I want...

Assuming it's another 3300+ lb. "sports" car built on lux-car platform, i'll skip it...

Since the IDx was canceled there was a rumored of a base 4 cyl model Z to compete with the GR86 & 2.0 Supra.

A smaller, lighter, turbo 4 powered Z would be a much better idea these days.

So naturally it’ll weigh 3900lbs and have a 4.0liter turbo VQ

Nissan Has A Chance To Succeed Where The 2020 Toyota Supra Failed

Nissan Has A Chance To Succeed Where The 2020 Toyota Supra Failed

In a video released today, Nissan finally announced the replacement for the more-than-a-decade-old 370Z sports car. While the video leaves a lot to the imagination, reports over the past couple of months suggest it’ll be a massive step in the right direction. Most importantly, this is Nissan’s chance to succeed where Toyota failed with the 2020 Supra.

Nissan’s coupe ran relatively unopposed for 11 years, until the 2020 Toyota Supra came along, but by then, the Nissan was ancient news. Surprisingly, the new Supra didn’t completely outshine the 370Z on paper.

Despite being so old, the Nissan actually put up a decent fight with power output and a curb weight similar to the 2020 Supra. The Toyota Supra does benefit from a pair of turbos, which help lower its 0-60 mph sprint time, but, crucially, the 370Z comes with a six-speed manual transmission. A point of contention with Supra fans who can only shift gears using a seven-speed automatic.

The Nissan makes do with 350 hp from a 3.5-liter V6 and weighs 3,333 lbs in its top trim. The 2020 Supra claims 335 hp from a BMW-sourced 3.0-liter inline-six and tips the scales at 3,397 lbs by comparison. While it’s true the 2021 Supra received more power at 382 hp, it’s still difficult to justify the $50,000 cost versus the Nissan 370 Z’s base price of $30,000.

According to the reports, Nissan will borrow the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 from the Infiniti Q60, which is good for 400 horsepower. That’s one point for Nissan. Judging by what little of the new car can be seen in the video, hints of 240Z are still obvious. And as long as Nissan stays more faithful to a retro-inspired look than Toyota did, it should get nod for design as well. Rumors circulating also hint at the new car taking the name 400Z as aopposed to reviving the 300ZX moninclature.

Where Nissan can really win favor is in the transmission and price tag departments. A manual transmission goes a long way with the sports car segment. It’s an increasingly rare sight, but Toyota caught tons of flack for not offering one on the Supra. Nissan can gain a lot of favor by making it an option for potential buyers.

The current price of the 2020 Nissan 370Z makes it a legitimate affordable alternative to the Supra. If Nissan can keep the price of its new Z car below the $40,000 mark, use the old model as a baseline, while benchmarking against the Supra, it has a chance to show Toyota everything it did wrong with one of the most hyped cars of the year.

The Q60 with the 2.0 originally started around $38K, but that only had about 200 hp. The current 3.0 trim (the 2.0 is dead) offers 300hp for $41K. Not really that great when the 370 starts at $30K. But obviously the Q60 has rear sears and is more luxury oriented.

But I would hope a stripped out turbo-4 (300hp) with a 6mt could come in under $35K. The Q60 Red Sport with the 400hp tune is about $60K, so yea, if they can offer that motor in the 400Z at $40K, then wow. But I doubt it. If I had my say, it would obviously go:

2.0 (300hp) - $30K
3.0 (400hp) - $35K
3.0 (500 hp) - $45K

At the top end, it would be a strong competitor to the Supra.

i was thinking along the same lines, but there will probably be a bigger price gap between all the hypothetical trim levels. either way, i can see all comparable Z vs Supra models with Nissan being around $10k cheaper vs their Toyota counterpart.
