Motortrend does a speculative article based on what they know (or think they know) that says the new Z will be going after the Supra and Cayman market.

A (wishful thinking) case could be made for this strategy. Go after the Supra buyers with something with similar power and performance, but with an available manual transmission (a must-have deal-breaker for me), a lower price, and better reliability than a re-bodied BMW.

The Cayman case is murkier. On paper a 400Z (or even the 370Z) would seem to be a much better deal than a new Cayman. Similar to superior power and performance, much lower price and maintenance costs, and better reliability. But these days I suspect many Porsche buyers buy them for the name, for the image, for the snob appeal and brag value of being able to say down at the local gym and bar (when it's possible to safely go back to them, pandemic willing) that they drive a "Por-shuh". For those people who value image over price and value, there is no substitute and they would never be happy with a mere pedestrian Nissan over a Porsche.

But then I also suspect that most buyers in the market for a $80-$100,000 new Cayman won't be cross-shopping a Nissan Z at half that price. The more appropriate comparator might be new Z vs used Cayaman, but there again if someone wants a Porsche, they're going to buy a Porsche, IMS risk be damned.

Like a friend of mine who insists on buying the highest model number BMW (5 series, 7 series, etc.) he can afford, which invariably end up having over 100,000 miles and are maintenance and reliability nightmares. For the same price he could buy any one of a number of late-model low-mileage or even new Japanese cars with far superior reliability and arguably performance. But he would never consider it, because to him what matters most is the perceived prestige of a Ger-mahn car and being able to brag to people that he drives a '7 series Beemer'.

What I find interesting is that there is so much speculation about the Z, and apparently so much publicity from Nissan, 2-3 years before it will be on the market. It seems like the Supra all over again, talking about it for interminably long before anyone can actually buy it. I don't know if this shows how serious Nissan is about actually building and selling a new Z, or how desperate they are for any attention and favorable publicity at this point.

To each their own. There's no right or wrong. Enjoy whatever floats your boat.

I know nothing of this car, nor is it even remotely on my radar. But I saw this and figured I'd post for yous guys. But having a manual is a massive perk in a world of flappy paddles.

So, your friend's name is Biff and he lives in 1985?

Next Gen 86 is no longer on my radar, especially since it (99%) won’t have a turbo.

Very interested in the new Z however. Are we really expecting it to take them 2-3 years to release this? Why couldn’t they have this out in a year, maybe 1.5 years max?

possible covid delays aside, it is sounding like end of 2022, so roughly 2 years.

I'm definitely hyped for the Z now that they're hinting at the turbo and confirming the 6-speed (at least for this proto ver). But I find the timing of the promotion puzzling, especially if there is no plan to bring it to production next year. I get they're trying to drum up interest in the brand, but teasing a product over multiple years never goes over well.

The company probably has delays because of COVID and because of restructuring.

If the weight is right and the looks are retro, it is definitely something I would consider after I’m ready to move on from the BRZ. Having a manual is a necessity, so that leaves a lightly used Cayman/older 911, next boosted 86, boosted Miata and this. The Cayman is looking less interesting the more I read and hear about the gearing.
