I'm finally done. Deposits at 4 different dealers variously over 9 months and ultimately I got it by random calling. Not my perfect MSRP-only deal I held out for.. I end up with a $1500 extended warranty I didn't really need but at least its legit and I get something. Cue the RTV jokes!

I elaborated a bit on it elsewhere recently in this thread, but the approach that finally worked for me was I figured out precisely when allocations for a region would lock in then at that time I called around. A salesman ran a search on available allocations for what I wanted and bam. Definitely a lot of luck required, YMMV but it got me out of purgatory. I never directly asked salespeople to search for me. That said, if I did it all over again I probably would.

One last note, the API trick is still possible. I can do it on mobile or desktop browser, no developer tools needed.

Code:
https://api.rti.toyota.com/marketplace-inventory/vehicles/*VIN*?isVspec=True
Replace *VIN* with the car VIN in that link and look for the status next to "dealerCategory" in the first few lines. I also had valid ETA dates once it went to F status. My car came right in the middle of the estimate.

As for the less-than-ideal spec, I guess it depends on your situation. I'd like to think my ideal spec is worth waiting for, but if you need a replacement car sooner, you make do.

There was a point in the summer where I considered taking something besides my ideal spec. Figured I could enjoy it then sell it and easily break even once the real deal came. I'm glad I waited, that wouldn't have been worth the hassle. (I did get exactly what I wanted, only caveat was the extended warranty.)

The extended warranty may seem like a bad deal but it is a first model year car and it just may come in handy.

Received a call from the dealership last night, nothing new, no allocations, 10 months in. Premium M/T allocation request, larger dealership.

I hope your dealer is still actually trying. Is your deal with them for MSRP? Have they sold any other 86's with markup?

Agreement made in Dec with my original dealer was MSRP, before they had a clue how hot the 86 would be. By Feb they were selling base automatics for $5k markup. They strung me along for probably 5 months where they likely had no intention of getting my spec in because they would "lose big on it" as they saw in their eyes. Finally told me in June that they couldn't give me a car at MSRP.

It's been agreed upon that it will be sold at msrp, but we all know how that can go. They have received AT's and a few base models. I'm being told there aren't many manuals being allocated to their region, and even fewer premium manuals.

Do you have it in writing? If you don't have a signed sales agreement, I'd seriously doubt you'll get one at MSRP.

I don't think a signed sales agreement would stop the dealership from doing whatever they want anyways. What would be the recourse, me suing them? lol

Might as well order a BRZ or count on a markup.

Spoke to my sales guy today, they have a white premium auto for the next allocation. 15 premium manuals allocated for my region, they obviously did not get any of them. So at this point I think I’m going to put an order in for a BRZ whenever they open back up, and maybe by this time next year it will come in. Not the car I want, but after waiting a year I’m done playing the allocation game.
