My buddy made coffee can forge, so we’ll be doing heat treating ourselves... til we gotta do O1, D2 or other mystical metal for beginner to heat treat lol As for the handle, I’ll be using G10 plus maybe adding some carbon fiber for the looks. Still still debating on final design.

I just bought belt sander, sand papers & few filers from harbor freight to get this far. It’s not THAT hard to get into. Hardest part is prob heat treating... which I haven’t done it yet. Plus some custom jig you might want to make filing easier.

I’m no expert, but if you do start, buy shit tone of sandpapers, cuz you’ll use A LOT of em. Of course, you can do 1095, 440C or other better metal... but for beginner wolf will prob agree w me to use 1080/1084 steel.
Very nice... G10 will make for a very durable handle. All I can say is absolutely wear an N95 mask at minimum even hand sanding that stuff. The dust is horrible on your lungs and you will have itchy skin for days no matter what you do. Wet-sanding it helps a lot to keep dust down and you will get a lot more life out of your sandpaper too.

I highly recommend Rhynowet Redline A/O sandpaper for both metal and any sort of handle material. Lasts a super long time and was always cheaper than the wet/dry stuff I could buy locally, even with importing from the USA. I still have some that I use for the odd woodworking project I do.

Looking forward to more pics!

I have got the dumb part down. Wish I could come up on some of that luck.

One of these days, the State of Idaho is going to fix that broken machine - then it will slowly take its money back - plus 10%. -
