"First unveiled at the 1985 International Motor Show Germany, the MID4 was a concept car designed by Nissan to originally go on sale in the mid-late 1980s. Nissan had aimed the MID4 to compete with European supercars from Porsche and Ferrari. It featured a mid-engined all wheel drive layout as well as a wide array of technology and features that would eventually find their way into other Nissan production cars. The MID4 prototypes would evolve into the MID4 II, though it would never be put into production." Never heard of it before.

Sorry, when I said "are you sure" I was more questioning the appeal of the car.
The pics were of the remaining example at the Nissan Zama Heritage Collection. Most of the car was built using raided Z32 parts. |

There were a couple of 370Zs running in the SRO America series last year in the Touring Car class. They held their own with all the BMW 2 series cars that make up the majority of the class. I cannot remember if they won any of the races but they were on the podium a couple times.

The problem I've heard with tracking the 350/370z is that one solid hpde day will fry the crappy viscous LSD, once the fluid is overheated it's never the same, and I think a few model years need an aftermarket oil cooler. Other than that a great middle between a Miata and pony car. I've definitely seen a few track and autox and when set up well they punch way above their weight. I'd definitely be cross shopping it against some used Porsches and BMWs if I wanted some more power and weight.

Loved the first one though, mid-engine, four wheel drive, beautiful.

Thanks, was not aware there were two versions of this car.
Typical Nissan. They do one thing then they change their minds after a year or so of sitting on the idea. Even their Le Mans efforts reflects this... 1999 R391 was developed and raced, but got the plug pulled after a year. 2015 GT-R LM Nismo was developed and raced, but got the plug pulled after 1 race... Don't get me started on the late 1990s. They had all of these sports cars on separate platforms and selling at the same time: Z32 S13 S15 R33/34 One of the greatest and dumbest companies ever. |

And yet it'd be nice if we knew Nissan would bring back that sports car spirit. I liked this race car (no idea what the model is) at the Nissan Ginza Crossing that I saw back in February (not the greatest photos, sorry): Everything else at the demo "shop" were Nismo economy type cars (like a Juke, I think) or w/e. (other than that futuristic "GTR" demo car, and a Red R35).

Is it safe to say more people here would be more excited about a new Silvia/S16 than a new Z car?

Duh? Most people here dropped tens of thousands of dollars on a 200hp/2750# car and skipped the 320hp/3,200# offerings by Nissan and Hyundai or the 400hp/3,500# cars from Ford and Chevy for not much more money.

Liked my old S13 240SX a lot, and I like my BRZ a lot, but what I'd really like would be a shorter-wheelbase 2-seat version with 50/50 or better weight distribution. But we keep on getting these overweight sports cars built out of luxury car platforms. Doh... Last edited by ZDan; 05-04-2020 at 06:38 PM. |

In general, I would prefer a 86-looking-car that is a two-seater with a Supra-sized wheelbase (97”) or shorter. Essentially remove the rear seats of the 86 and shorten the car by slightly shifting the engine and driver back three inches (making it more of a front mid engine setup and 50/50) and the rear forward. I want shorter overhangs than the Supra in proportion to the 86’s now, but in proportion to a shortened platform; I think the Supra looks odd with a longer body than the 86, but a shorter wheelbase. Weight would naturally drop a little from such a change in dimensions. If they did nothing to the powertrain, but stiffened the engine and transmission to support 350-400 tq then I would be happy. I also wouldn’t mind a lighter and more compact turbocharged engine like a 1.6L turbo three cylinder or flat four. If it had tuning potential and D4S then that is all I would need. 2600lbs with 200hp that is capable of more from the box without a rebuild on E85. That car is more likely to be a S16 or 2nd gen 86, but I don't really see that happening either. I don’t think they will fully embrace the sports car like the Miata has. They want it to be practical like a Civic. Ehhh. The Miata RF with the CARB turbo kit seems like a good package. I would prefer slightly larger dimensions and a fixed (lighter weight) hardtop, but I will have to see what comes around in the next five years.
