On a somewhat related transmission inquiry.
This is my first car with a helical differential, and I notice some oddness from the rear. I've had a couple pick-ups, a 350Z, and a Firebird V-8 and never noticed so much gear lash. At least what I perceive as gear lash or slop that seems to be coming from the rear end. It also seems to make a slight "clink" sound after upshifting and letting the clutch out quickly. Anyone else have this experience?

I had trouble with my old car getting it into 1st gear from the stop. Turned out to be the pilot bearing.

Raise both rear wheels off the ground, start the car, push and hold the clutch down and shift into 1st gear. If the wheels spin (whole holding down the clutch), your pilot bearing is bad.

The first gear thing seems norm these days. I haven't taken delivery of my BRZ yet, but my current Yaris can be a b#tch to get into first while moving, even when all warm, forget it when its cold. (even with dbl clutch rev match etc)

Only time I engage 1st gear is from a dead stop or literally 1-3mph(no clutch needed). If you're going to roll a stop sign(usually done at 5mph+), use 2nd instead.

Thanks for all the pointers on the first gear thing -- I think it's been addressed enough times, guys . I've started to roll through yields in second now and only shift into first if around like 5 mph. I was just used to going into first all the time in my Miata because otherwise it would take 10 minutes to go anywhere with such little torque haha.

I'm also getting the rattling noise. Does it when I start the car when it's been sitting for at least 3-4 hours, then goes away after 20 minutes of driving. Tried to get the dealer to re-create but it's a PITA to leave it there, as they don't seem to believe me.

Hey guys,
I just got my FRS yesterday and I'm hearing some bearing noise when I'm accelerating at below 2000 RPM, also sometime when i'm rolling to stop with N, the rpm dropped to like 500-400 rpm and I would hear that noise as well.
any one knows if it's normal?
thanks
Nick

Normal. This engine seems to have some ticks and rattles. RPM drop only happens when the engine is still cold in my experience. Your car it's perfect and brand new. Stop worrying. enjoy fr-s
