Honestly, at this stage I’m holding on to my 370Z. Whilst I follow the release of new sports cars keenly, nothing out now or coming soon really grabs me enough or is different enough to justify jumping into a new car. The only new cars that might tempt me (A110, Cayman, Emira) are much more expensive and I struggle to justify the expense when my current car is still fairly new and quick enough for public streets.

The one car that might tempt me is the MX-5 RF… if I could live with the compromises required (mainly lack of storage space). I wonder if they will do an NE generation and if so, how that will pan out?

There are over 270 million cars registered in the US alone. Of those only 0.6% (1.8M) are EVs. (remember the stats you see are of new car sales, not of registered cars). I personally own two cars that are daily driven that are over 15 years old.

I don't think gasoline supplies is going to be an issue any time soon, but what do I know?

Well, weight effects performance but it doesn't exclude a vehicle from being performance capable. What would be your definition of a sports sedan (assuming such a thing really exists of course).

We are seeing that already, with the chip shortage, and yes, it's likely that last generation desirable cars will at least depreciate more slowly. I suspect, unless they are outlawed, an entire industry will grow up to support keeping them running.

Sort of like Cuba and their support for 50's era US cars.

Your last cool ICE car?

I personally think there’s a big difference in design philosophy between a sports car and a performance car. Achieving high performance doesn’t necessarily make a car fun to drive. I’d say a sports sedan would need to focus more on driving feel, feedback, and handling, rather than all out performance. By those tokens the sports sedan may have died about a decade ago or maybe more. Seems like everything that’s not an ecobox is now a 400hp+ 4000lb+ behemoth.

Fair enough. I'm not really stuck on the terminology either way, but also don't think there is anything magical about weight. It's just another factor on the overall equation.

Yeah I can definitely see this happening too.

You’re right there’s nothing magical about weight, but weight (relative to the rest of the segment) seems to be a good indicator of the overall design philosophy of a given enthusiast car.

Lightweight feels are pretty magical. Unless I fall into a pile of cash, I'm set with this one. One of my friends has a Smart car. I've been pestering him with videos of Hayabusa builds.

I was being a little flippant when I made the post but I did and now I have to live with the consequences.
Regarding your first sentence. I don't disagree but it is the label that I think weird: "sports sedan". A 2 ton GT car I have no qualms about. There is something about a Bentley I think is wonderful.
And because I haven't given it much thought I'm guessing this would fit my definition:

a few cars ago i had a brz. probably was a mistake to sell that but i had to check the high hp car thing off my list before i get a family. since that brz ive had a miata, elise, corvette and an evo x. the corvette sucked but was silly fast. evo does almost everything a brz and the corvette did for me all in one while having back seats. the elise will never go anywhere.

I think for me, the last 'cool' ICE car I'll own is my next car I'll purchase. Which would either be the Gen 2 BRZ/86 or the GR Corolla (if it comes).

For me probably going to be the GR86 and keep my beater vehicle for hauling the family until I have no choice but move into something electric. That way I will still have my fun gas car for the weekends.
